Episode 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power introduces a new character simply titled: Adari. First mentioned by the orcs using the elf Arondir and his companions, he appears at the bottom, partially obscured, but here is everything we know about this mysterious individual.
The character appears at the end of the episode, obscured. He is tall, wears long hair and metal armor, the gauntlet of which may be reminiscent of Sauron’s armor as we know it from the Lord of the Rings movies. It’s hard to tell if it’s an elf or not, but it still looks bearded.
Adar
If he is indeed an elf, he would deny his own since he mostly uses elves (Arondir, Revion, and Medhor) and works with orcs who clearly respect and possibly worship him as a god.
J.R.R. Tolkien translated “our father” into Sindarin (the language of the gray elves), which tells us that Adari means “father”. Moreover, Adari is probably exactly one of the Gray Elves, also called Sindar (Legolas being the most famous representative). Those who remained in Middle-earth, according to Tolkien’s writings, were more likely to establish forest kingdoms rather than alliances with orcs. Could it be a corrupt gray elf?
Adar is portrayed by actor Joseph Maul, who appeared in Game of Thrones as Benjen Stark, Ned Stark’s brother and first patrolman of the Night’s Watch. In barely 6 episodes, split between seasons 1, 6 and 7, the character had time to die north of the wall, resisting being turned into a ghost.
When Joseph Maul was announced in the cast of Rings of Power, information Deadline It is reported that he will play “Oren” and will be the main antagonist of the first season. The character had a name change, like most of the ones announced at the time, and it would be an a priori character that wouldn’t be an ally of Sauron and would have his own goals.
Either way, it looks like it will be a newly created character for the purposes of the show.
He clearly has his orcs looking for something in the trenches, perhaps an old battlefield? Maybe he’s looking for a broken sword with the Mark of Sauron? Maybe another powerful artifact? One thing’s for sure: we can’t wait to see her in Episode 4, which airs next Friday on Prime Video.
