Deauville 2022: Aftersun and the Normal People star triumphs in the list

Charlotte Wells’ first feature film Aftersun has won two awards at the 48th Deauville American Film Festival. Among them the most prestigious. “War Pony” also wins twice.

It was the favorite of our competition. And it clearly caught the eye of the jury chaired by Arnaud Desplechin: Charlotte Wells’ first feature Aftersun did win the Grand Prize at the 48th American Film Festival in Deauville this Saturday, September 10, 2022.

After the Critics’ Week at the last Cannes Film Festival, this great drama directed by Paul Mescal (The Revelation of Normal People with Daisy Edgar-Jones) also won over the press jury, which gave it its prize.

A sensitive, delicate and moving feature film centered on a father’s vacation with his daughter, it does not yet have a release date in France. Mubi as its distributor, Aftersun could have done like Kelly Reichardt’s first cow, which also went through Deauville two years ago: first on the platform, then in our cinemas. The case will follow.

But Aftersun wasn’t the only film that pulled double duty. Also screened at the recent Cannes Film Festival (but alongside Un Certain Regard), where it won the Camera d’Or for Best First Feature Film in all sections, War Pony delighted two juries: Arnaud Desplechini. , who awarded him his Jury Prize (tied to Palm Trees and Power Lines). And Revelation, presided over by Elodie Bouches, who presented him with his trophy, was generally awarded the film considered the most innovative.

Co-directed by Riley Keough (Elvis’ grandson) with Gina Gammell, War Pony immerses us in the Pine Ridge Native American Reservation with members of the Oglala Lakota tribe. And the result is as soulful in its precision as it is in the way it captures the America of the Forsaken. A feature film that also doesn’t have a release date, but has been acquired by Les Films du Losange, so the date could be coming soon.

Finally, note that another actress behind the camera, Charlotte Le Bon, was awarded the Ornano-Valentine prize, awarded to the first feature film (and announced before the start of the festival), thanks to Falcon Lake, so that Emily Criminelle , which passed at the end of the competition, was crowned by the public .
