Tonight on TV: The Best Cartel Movie

Every day, AlloCiné recommends watching a movie (again) on TV. Tonight: Denis Villeneuve’s Inferno of the Cartels.

A former actor, Taylor Sheridan turns to screenwriting to deal with a direct influence on him: the drug cartels on the US-Mexico border. Originally from Texas, he sees how the charm of the area has disappeared, giving way to a place without faith or law. After extensive documentation, he signs the script for Sicario – literally “hitman” in Spanish.

Unlike most films that deal with these themes, the main character of the story is a woman, inspired by a soldier she met in Texas. A point that immediately appealed to Canadian director Denis Villeneuve when he joined the project. Thus, in the company of Josh Brolin, Benicio del Toro or even Jon Bernthal, who are used to playing big guns, Emily Blunt appears in the skin of a charming heroine. He plays an idealized young FBI recruit who is forced to question his beliefs in order to survive at the center of a drug bust.

Part war movie, part noir thriller, part moral drama, part existential tragedy Sicario Breaks all genre codes. Thanks to careful staging, skillfully maintained tension and a very instructive documentary aspect, Denis Villeneuve achieves a shocking political work.

In addition to receiving excellent critical acclaim upon release, the film was a commercial success, grossing $84 million at the worldwide box office. Internet users on AlloCiné gave it an average viewer rating of 4 out of 5.
