During D23, AlloCiné was able to speak with Barry Jenkins, director of Mufasa: The Lion King, the prequel to The Lion King.
The Mufasa-themed Lion King prequel was made official during D23 last weekend. Directed by Oscar-winning director Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), the feature film, which combines live action and digital effects, looks back at Simba’s father’s childhood.
During the announcement, Disney gave the public a sneak peek of Mufasa: The Lion King. We see the Rocher des Lions and hear Rafiq’s voice. On the other side of the savannah, a young lion cub caught in the rain was taken away from its family. He survived and found a mysterious lion…
These first pictures alone raise many questions. Therefore, Mufasa was taken by the king of the land of lions and would not be his rightful heir. Therefore, Barry Jenkins’ film will allow us to better understand the complex relationship that exists between Scar and Mufasa.
This excerpt also lets you discover that iconic characters from the original film will be Rafiki, Zazu, and Scar.
The video, which was made especially for D23, features Timon and Pumbaa. Timon declaresWait, wait, wait, I’m not in this story? I don’t feel like watching…“A meta joke that had its effect in the room.
Mufasa: The Lion King It will be released in the form of flashbacks. Rafik, Timon and Pumbaa tell the young lion cub the story and rise of one of the greatest kings the land of lions has ever seen.
Mufasa and Simba in The Lion King 2019
On the red carpet of the convention, AlloCiné was able to speak briefly with the director. For the latter, Mufasa has the same energy as his illustrious predecessor.
“He is different from the Lion King, but will have the same energy. Mufasa tells how Simba’s father became king. His story tells us from his childhood to the birth of his son.
In the original movie, Mufasa represents greatness. We admire his royalty, his leadership. We think he has it all because he was born well…
But in this prequel, we explore how his friends and family made him who he is. We discover his journey. Mufasa means a lot to me and I think it’s a movie that kids and their parents who grew up with the Disney classic will enjoy watching.*“

Barry Jenkins
When the project was announced in December 2020, Barry Jenkins told HollywoodReporter :”The opportunity to work with Disney to continue this beautiful story of friendship, love and heritage while continuing my work chronicling the lives and souls of the African diaspora is a dream come true.“.
Released in July 2019, Jon Favreau’s remake of the Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers classic grossed $1.66 billion at the international box office, making The Lion King Disney’s highest-grossing live-action film.
Therefore, expectations are high for Mufasa. Having Barry Jenkins at the helm should reassure fans and bring depth and freshness to the prequel.
