During its back-to-school conference this Wednesday, September 14th, CANAL+ unveiled the first trailer for Marie-Antoinette, its next event series. This large-scale historical biopic, scheduled to air on the encrypted channel in October, focuses on the rise of the young Austrian sovereign at the Court of Versailles and offers a modern and avant-garde look at this page in French history. It is already often adapted.
In this new iteration, Marie-Antoinette, struggling to propose an heir to the crown, must face the machinations and betrayals of other members of the court who do not see her arrival favorably. His success causes jealousy and rivalry.
Slanderous pamphlets and constant rumors about his personal life further damage his reputation. It will take a lot of courage and honor for him to defeat his many enemies at the gates of Versailles…
Written by Deborah Davis, an American screenwriter nominated for an Oscar in 2019 for Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favorite, Marie-Antoinette is directed by Britain’s Pete Travis (Bloodlands) and Belgium’s Geoffrey Enthoven (Invisible).
Co-produced by Capa Drama, Banijay Studios, responsible for the historical series Versailles, and the production company Les Gens, this new original creation for Canal+ is shot in many iconic locations, namely the castles of Versailles, Vaux-le-. Vicomte and Lezin.
As for the casting, the young German-Russian actress Emilia Schule, who can be seen especially in Berlin 56 and Berlin 59, will have a tough task of slipping into the shoes of the young queen. Louis XVI is played by Louis Cunningham (The Bridgerton Chronicles) and his grandfather Louis XV is played by British actor James Purefoy (Witchcraft, Sex Education).
Finally, France’s Gaia Weiss, who notably starred in Vikings and Revolution, will be the king’s mistress, Madame du Barry. Consisting of 8 episodes of 52 minutes, Marie-Antoinette is already shaping up to be the channel’s next major series.
