Oscar 2023: which of these 5 films will represent France?

And there are 5 films on France’s shortlist for the 2023 Oscars… Find out which film could become the heir to the titan Julia Ducournau, France’s candidate in 2022.

The pre-selection of French films for the Oscars has just been opened.

The commission (see composition below) chose 5 films:

  • A Plein temps by Éric Gravel (released March 16, 2022, available on DVD/VOD)
  • Les Pires by Lise Akoka and Romane Gueret (released on November 30)
  • Revoir Paris by Alisa Winokur (currently showing, video above)
  • Saint-Omer by Alice Diop (released November 23)
  • One Beautiful Morning by Mia Hansen-Love (Released October 5)

The name of the finalist will be announced on September 23, 2022.

Several of these films have already been noticed at festivals in recent months: Saint Omer recently won two prizes at the Venice Film Festival. Full Time won the Interpretation Award for Laure Calami, also at the Venice Film Festival in 2021. Finally, Les Pires was awarded at the Cannes Film Festival (Uncertain Regard section) and the Angoulême Francophonie Film Festival. Note the strong representation of female directors in this selection: 4 out of 5 films are directed by women.

Since the reform was announced this summer, the commission is made up of seven professionals appointed annually by the Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul Malak, at the suggestion of CNC President Dominic Butona.recalls CNC in a press release. In 2022, they are exporters Grégoire Mellin and Hengame Panahi, producers Didard Domehr and Philippe Rouslet, directors Jacques Audiard and Michel Gondry and, as a qualified person, Toscan du Plantier. The Commission meets in the presence of the President of the CNC and the President of Unifrance, who are awarded the status of observers without deliberative vote.

Changes in the composition of the commission and the selection process

In addition, the CNC specifies that the selection process has evolved this year: feature films wishing to be nominated for the French Oscars had to submit their application by September 1. 33 films received applications this year.

For the record, only feature films released between January 1 and November 30, 2022, in a majority language other than English (but not necessarily French), with a majority French cast are eligible.

The 95th Academy Awards will be held on March 12, 2023 in Los Angeles.
