The series took a moment to remember a teammate.
The fifth season of ‘Cobra Kai’ has shot to the top of the most watched Netflix series this weekthe fight between good and evil for the California Valley is more intense and bloody than ever.
Throughout the 10-episode season, the team decided to take a moment and dedicate one of their installments to a deceased member of the team.
Jeff Kay was commemorated at the end of the third episode ‘Playing With Fire’with a dedication to his memory.
But who is Jeff Kay? Here’s what you need to know about the beloved cast member.
Who is Jeff Kay and how is he related to Cobra Kai?
Jeff Kay, born in April 1965, died of a heart attack on October 17, 2021, while ‘Cobra Kai’ was shooting its fifth season.
He was an assistant director and part of the production teamand had previously worked on shows like ‘Drop Dead Diva,’ ‘Rizzoli and Isles,’ and ‘American Housewife.’
He is credited on IMDb in the ‘Cobra Kai’ episode ‘Playing With Fire’ as the first assistant director.
Following her death last year, ‘American Housewife’ actor Diedrich Bader was one of the first to post a dedication on Twitter, writing: “My friend Jeff Kay, the veteran ‘American Housewife’ assistant director, passed away today. . It was a beautiful and joyful ray of light and it brought nothing but joy to every second., the world is a dimmer place without him and everyone who ever had the chance to know him is better off because of him. D.E.P”.
Actor Jason Dolley, another member of ‘American Housewife’, responded to Bader’s tweet by writing: “So sorry to hear this. Jeff was a kind and welcoming presence. I was only on set with him a handful of times, but I remember him fondly. I’m sorry for your loss, Diedrich.”
Two things about TV production:
1) The crew is family. You work so hard, so long, you become close.
2) The 1st AD runs the set and is in charge of everything. Not 1st AD…no show.
Jeff Kay was one of the best 1st ADs in the biz.

Robert Phillips, who worked on ‘Cobra Kai’, also remembered him noting: “I’ve known Jeff for the last month in Atlanta. He didn’t know me, but he took the time to talk to me about this industry. He told me about his store muffins, how he got into the movie business and his love of golf. I wish I knew him like everyone else. RIP.”
While Nicolas Falacci, co-creator of ‘Numb3rs’, another of Kay’s projects, called him “family” in a shared tribute to his former colleague.
He wrote: “Two things about television production:
1) The team is a family. They work so hard and for so long that they become very close friends.
2) The first director of photography directs the set and is in charge of everything. Without the first director, there is no show.
3) Jeff Kay was one of the best cinematographers in the world. Jeff Kay was family“.
Obviously, the ‘Cobra Kai’ team thinks the same and, therefore, has consolidated it as part of its history forever.
