The success of “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the sequel to the 2009 hit 13 years after the original, is still uncertain. But director James Cameron recently said he believes the film could have been a huge flop if it came out earlier.
In an interview with The New York Timesthe same in which he spoke of clashes with 20th Century Fox, James Cameron responded to concerns about the great distance between the release of the two films, a gap of 13 years.
Cameron said he initially feared audiences would stop worrying about this universe after so many years of its introduction, and that he’s not sure it will find major box office success in theaters.
“I was a little worried that I had stretched too far, in our fast-paced modern world, with ‘Avatar 2’ coming 12 years later. Until we released the trailer and got 148 million views in 24 hours, “he said.” There’s that little-seen but admired principle, which is: ‘Wow, we haven’t seen this in a long time, but I remember how much it was beautiful then. ‘ Does it work in our favor? I do not know. I think we’ll find out. “
While he’s not sure if it will hit theaters now, Cameron thinks the sequel could also fail if it were released soon after the original. “I think I could have done a sequel two years later and it was a blast because people didn’t relate to the characters or the direction of the film,” he said.
On the other hand, Cameron has experience making sequels that came out years after the original and there are recent success stories. One such example is “Top Gun: Maverick”, which came 30 years after “Top Gun: Raging Aces” and was a huge box office success.
As for the sequels released years later, directed by Cameron, we have “Aliens, the Rescue”, which arrived seven years after “Alien – The 8th Passenger”, by Ridley Scott. There was also a seven-year gap between “The Terminator” and its first sequel. Either way, the second film performed better at the box office than the first.
This will be a difficult task for “Avatar: The Way of Water”, after all its predecessor grossed over $ 2.8 billion worldwide, which is the highest grossing in history.
The film will see the return of Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Joel David Moore and Giovanni Ribisi, as well as Sigourney Weaver, who will return in a completely new and surprising role as her character died in “Avatar”.
