The groundbreaking “Avatar” returns to the screens after 13 years in preparation for the sequel; understand success

James Cameron’s film that revolutionized cinema was re-released before the release of the second

SPECIAL FOR THE STATE – To “warm up” the first of Avatar: The Way of the Waterswhich will be released in theaters in December, avatarthe first film in the series, will debut on Thursday 22. avatar, in the 4K version, is not just a nod to the nostalgic. It is part of a marketing strategy. In this case, supported by a solid foundation. When it was released in 2009, Avatar was a huge hit and not just with the public. Much of the criticism has considered the blockbuster of James Cameron something at least unusual. An off-curve point in the routine blockbuster map, usually full of special effects, lots of action, no reflections, few nuances and lots of predictability.

avatar it is of another order. To begin with, part of a personal desire of the director. Or so the legend says. Cameron says he dreamed of the story and wants to turn that vision into a movie. It was Pandora, a planet, or rather an imaginary moon, on which the inhabitants would live perfect harmony with nature.

In 1995 he wrote a script, already containing the characters, the environment, the flora, the fauna and the humanoids that lived there. However, both financial and technological resources were needed to put this idea into practice. And both came in 2005 with refined IMAX 3D technology and millions of Studios of the twentieth century. The special effects were improved over the period and allowed for an immersive experience in a fantasy world inhabited by humanoid people, bizarre flora and fantastic and ferocious animals. This experience was provided by stereoscopic 3D and its unprecedented degree of depth and illusion of reality.

profitable

In terms of public response, it was an avalanche. avatar became one of the most profitable films in the history of cinema, perhaps the most profitable. According to the IMDB portal, it cost $ 237 million and had a worldwide gross of $ 2.8 billion. Yes: billions of dollars. In Brazil alone, it took about 9.150 million people to go to the cinema, according to data from the Filme B portal.

The performance in Oscar 2010 was far less spectacular. Although nominated in nine categories, the film only won in three, all of which are technical: photography, production design And visual effects. Lost or absent in so-called “artistic” categories, such as the best movie, direction, road map And launch.

According to the Oscars diagnosis, is Avatar just a tech venture, albeit one of great popular appeal? Nothing more doubtful. Traditional and demanding cinema magazines did not snub him. On the contrary. the austere positive gave it the highest rating of five stars. And also the surly Cahiers du Cinema, clinging to the dogma of authors’ politics since the 1950s, has awarded him three stars out of five, the equivalent of “good”. The review aggregator Metacritical gives you 83 points for up to one hundred.

the plot of avatar it is well known. Jake Sullivan (Sam Worthington), a paraplegic war veteran, takes the place of his twin brother, killed in a robbery, and embarks on a mission to the distant planet Pandora. The goal is to extract a very precious mineral which, unfortunately, is found only in the place occupied by the Na’vi, who adore mother nature. To get rid of the Na’vi, you will need to create a being like them and send him as an infiltrator to convince them to switch places and make way for humans. Among other things, they arrive on the planet armed to the teeth. This ideal of violence is embodied in Colonel Quaritch (Stefano Lang), the villain of the story. If it’s not for the good, it’s for the bad, because that’s the colonizer philosophy.

And that’s what it’s all about avatar, inside. He makes a critical and contemporary comment on the colonization process and also on the threat to nature. Political and also environmental film – dimensions that are no longer antagonistic today, as in the past, but complementary. After all, the fate of planet Earth depends on political attitudes, such as the abandonment of fossil fuels and, even more so, the dogma of infinite economic growth. Humanity needs to restrain – and hesitates to do so. With the Amazon ablaze, glaciers melting and European summer reaching desert temperatures, avatar it looks even more current than when it was first released 12 years ago.

look of time

At that time, the film was already inserted in its time. In addition to the environmental issue, the underlying idea was the criticism of US invasions of other countries. avatar it’s a rare high-budget film that treats war frankly, even if ideally the guide is humanist. Pandora will be invaded because she possesses a precious metal as an energy source (the fictional superconductor unobtainium), at a time when the ability to generate energy on Earth would be exhausted due to the waste and exhaustion of the planet.

The reasons, therefore, are of an economic nature. The Prussian Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831) formulated a famous phrase – “War is the extension of politics by other means” – which is still applicable today. We can add that war is also the development of the economy by other means. By exchanging the rare metal for oil and Pandora for the Middle East, two and two are added together and we arrive at Iraq invaded by the United States under the pretext that it possesses weapons of mass destruction, a version swallowed up by the entire West, but which is not was confirmed and became the great fake news of those years. Alluding to these facts, against the light, avatar it turns out to be a clear, direct and even didactic political film.

Another bold point made by Cameron is that of armed resistance. Yes, there is the narrative strategy of making the infiltrator change sides out of conviction, but also for the arts of the heart – as he falls in love with a native, Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). Even with this extenuating circumstance, for a fantasy film it is quite risky to bring the idea that an invaded country (planet or moon, in this case) has the right to defend itself from the invader with all the means at its disposal. No wonder the people of Pandora resort to guerrilla techniques to fight the immense strength of an organized army equipped with state-of-the-art war technology. In this regard, the film echoes the Vietnam War, lost by the United States to the Vietcong guerrillas of Ho Chi Mihn.

disputes

This right of defense is a delicate point, which turns and returns to the cinema and invariably provokes discussions. More recently, between us, it was the turn of nightjarin Kleber Mendonca Filho And Giuliano Dornelles, who, touching on the subject, raised the usual objections. As you will recall, in the story of nightjar there are wealthy foreigners who turn the northeastern village into a game reserve, whose residents use vintage weapons taken from a cangaço museum to defend themselves. The basic idea is the same: whoever is attacked has the right to defend himself with the weapons he has. Thesis repudiated by unilateral pacifism, which criticizes the reaction of the invaded, but closes its eyes on the violence of the invader.

What can you expect from now Avatar: The Way of the Waters? The continuation of this ecological-philosophical line and also political? Or the dilution of themes into a tech show more focused on escapism and entertainment? Little is known, apart from the fact that it will be an epic about three hours long (the first Avatar lasts 2h41).

What is known is that, in this second module, there will be a large number of scenes shot underwater, which the title already indicates and could concern the vital question of the commitment of the oceans. But this is only a hypothesis. Right now some images have been shown to the journalists present at the D23 Expo. To maintain the mystery, the scenes did not form a coherent sequence that provided clues to the plot. The revelation of the secret is scheduled for December 16, when the film will be released in theaters.
