Cinema Quiz: Hey Bro! Are you a true Coen Brothers film connoisseur?

Cinema Quiz: Hey Bro! Are you a true Coen Brothers film connoisseur?

To celebrate Ethan Cohen’s 65th birthday on September 21st, we’re taking a quiz on the filmography of two of the most famous brothers in the 7th art.

While they always wrote the scripts for their films together, Joel and Ethan Coen, both born in the 1950s, didn’t always direct together. Before Ladykillers (2004), Joel was solely in charge, with Ethan directing production.

If the two brothers are often associated with the genre of comedy with films such as The Big Lebowski, O’Brothers or Intolerable Cruelty, they are not limited to this register. Their filmography also leaned towards thrillers and film noir, with films like Blood for Blood or Miller’s Crossing early in their career, or No Country for Old Men a bit later in the 2000s.

It was their fourth film, Burton Fink, released in 1991, which revealed to the general public three prestigious awards at the Cannes Film Festival: the Palme d’Or, the director’s award and the interpretation award for John Turturro’s favorite actor. Two directors with whom he will film five times.

No Country for Old Men, released in 2008, would mark another milestone in their filmography, with significant critical and public success, highlighted by four Oscars, including the most coveted: Best Picture and Best Director. As for True Grit, the remake of the 1969 Western starring Jeff Bridges as John Wayne, it’s the Coens’ biggest box office hit to date with $250 million in receipts.

Prolific directors, the two brothers have shot about twenty feature films. An extensive filmography, which we return to today with this quiz in nine films and nine questions.
