Nothing will be the same for Mother Agnes after episode 4 of Les Combattantes, which airs tonight at 10pm on TF1.
As war rages in the small village in eastern France where the action takes place, the mother superior of the Saint-Pauline convent, played by Julie de Bona, faces a tragic loss in the first episode of the series. A drama that gradually shakes his faith in God, even as a naked and mute war-wounded man falls into his arms in the middle of the forest. And prepares, still without him, to destroy all his convictions.
Indeed, without much surprise, Mother Agnes, trying to hide how much this man bothers her, finally crossed the line in the fourth episode of Les Combattantes. Above all, he enjoyed being alone as he thought of the beautiful stranger falling into his arms. Then just lovingly with him in the final minutes of the episode.
“My good sister discovers sexuality. And it was one of the most beautiful emotional scenes I’ve ever played. I didn’t expect that.”says Julie de Bona when asked about these sequences of nudity and sex, which we imagine are not easy to play.
“It was a big challenge for me. I’m very modest, it wasn’t easy. I don’t do a lot of sex scenes in general. Before that, I was very afraid to shoot the masturbation scene. Especially because we almost shot it on the first day (laughs), but I trusted the director, Alexandre Laurent, who I now know well because he had already directed me in Le Secret d’Elise and Le Bazaar de la Charité. I knew it was him. I’m going to paint it delicately and modestly. And it is.”.
To ensure everything went as smoothly as possible on set, Julie de Bona and Alexandre Laurent discussed the sequence extensively in advance, and nothing was left to chance. “We talked a lot with Julie. We love each other, she trusts me. The discussion is suddenly easier because we’re on a professional level.”In turn, the director of Les Combattantes, who recently gave us an interview behind the scenes of the series, explains.
“Obviously, it’s an awkward sequence. But it calmed me down, I cried. Not because of the scene itself, but because of the gift that the actor gave us. Watching that scene play out calmed me down. It was very exciting. But nothing is left to chance in sex scenes. We talk to the actor, I always say , what’s in my head, I ask if it’s okay, if he agrees. I talked about it with an actor once, I talked about it with an actor. I reveal everything to them so that there is no shame.”.
“I’m getting into the technicalities here, but for example men have shells. The sexes don’t touch each other.”Alexandre Laurent, who directed eight episodes of Les Combattantes, continues. “Nothing is left to chance. There is no improvisation. Everything is square, everything is planned as choreography. It’s fun, there are no excesses. It builds confidence, I think. The idea is to tell what’s happening, not to show it. That’s why it’s on TF1. Talk about fun , on the discovery of sexuality, sensuality, pleasure..
Despite the apprehensions she may have had before filming, Julie de Bona did not hesitate to film these large sequences of the series, which will disrupt the fate of Mother Agnes. Without doubting what these two scenes were going to bring out in him.
“My fears quickly disappeared because he turned out to be extraordinary while working on the character”admits Julie de Bona, who can also be seen at the moment in the credits of La Maison d’en face on the M6. “The sex scene between Mother Agnes and her wounded soldier was beautiful. You have to imagine a woman who has never felt human warmth in her body. Never hugged a man, never felt a man’s breath on her. Never indulged in carnal pleasure.”.
“It’s a whole part of his feelings that he destroyed. It’s a real discovery. It’s not like a scene of a teenager discovering sexuality, it has nothing to do with it. There we’re talking about a person who doesn’t have the right to do it, who doesn’t have the right to do it. He never let it happen Right to yourself and who suddenly has a real revelation. You have to live it until you die (laughs).”.
“I felt something incredible playing this scene. With this great actor who was absolutely respectful. This scene was really choreographed. And the awakening of this good sister’s sexuality was great in the acting. It is a great scene of emotions. I will remember it for a long time.”.
