Director Bassam Tariq (“Mogul Mowgli”) has dropped the movie “Blade” about the Marvel vampire hunter. The decision came the day before filming began.
The film starring Mahershala Ali (Oscar winner for “Moonlight” and “Green Book”) was supposed to start production in November, but Deadline sources say a new date must be determined after a replacement is chosen.
“Due to ongoing changes to our production schedule, Bassam will no longer continue as the director of ‘Blade’, but will remain as the film’s executive producer,” Marvel Studios said in a statement. “We appreciate Bassam’s talent and all the work he has done to get ‘Blade’ to where he is.”
There are still no details on the plot of the production, which was written by Stacy Osei-Kuffour (from the “Watchmen” series), the first black screenwriter to work on a Marvel Studios production.
In addition to Mahershala Ali as Blade, the cast also includes appearances from Aaron Pierre (“The Underground Railroad”) and Delroy Lindo (“Detachment Blood”).
The return of Blade to the cinema, after a trilogy with Wesley Snipes at the beginning of the century (between 1998 and 2004), was made official during the San Diego Comic-Con 2019 and is expected to premiere in November 2023.
