Blonde: No, the Netflix movie about Marilyn Monroe is not a biopic

The Netflix film “Blonde”, which is dedicated to the life of Marilyn Monroe, is not strictly speaking a biopic, but a fiction inspired by real events.

Released by Netflix on Wednesday, September 28, Andrew Dominique’s feature film Blonde sees Cuban actress Ana de Armas step into the shoes of the legendary Marilyn Monroe, whose childhood we explore before she was called Norma Jean Baker. But despite being largely inspired by Marilyn’s life, the film is not strictly a biopic.

Blonde is an adaptation of the novel of the same name by American author Joyce Carol Oates (available from Stock and Le livre de poche). Published in 2000, this 983-page book traces the life of the actress, divided into five chapters dedicated to the main stages of her existence: child, young girl, woman, Marilyn, life after death.

But while strongly inspired by Marilyn’s story, Joyce Carol Oates’ work was conceived as a work of fiction, adding many facts that were not the same as the troupe story created by Charlie Chaplin and Edward Robinson Jr. ., or her relationship with JFK, is summed up here in a particularly shocking scene of sexual abuse.

“My intention was to create a portrait of a woman as emblematic of her time and era as Emma Bovary was of hers. (…) Of course, Norma Jeane is actually more complex and certainly more admirable than ‘Emma’.” Bovary “ In particular, the author stated in his book La Foi d’un auteur and specified that The Blonde was initially considered as a short novel dedicated to the youth of Norma Jean. “A mythic, archetypal story that ends when she loses her baptismal name – Norma Jeane – to adopt the studio name ‘Marilyn Monroe.’.

Actual facts, or at least the lack of evidence, of a certain number of scenes that should have actually happened.
