“As a child I heard stories of elves being kidnapped by Morgoth. Tortured, twisted, turned into hideous creatures. You are one of them, aren’t you?”
So speaks Galadriel vs. Adari in Episode 6 of Rings of Power, released this Friday on Amazon Prime Video. This mysterious character, who seems to regard the Orcs as his own children, and is proud to have killed Sauron himself, thus illustrates the terrible process that some Elves underwent to transform them into Orcs.
Return to the evil appearance of these people as described in Tolkien’s work.
In the world created by the legendary British writer, evil is almost always born through the perversion of beauty and goodness. Thus, in the beginning, the Nazis were great kings of men, and Gollum was an innocent hobbit.
As for the first orcs, it’s between the pages The Silmarillion to discover their evil origins. We learn that during the first age of Middle-earth, the hermit Morgoth (the greatest evil figure in Tolkien’s world, whose only right-hand man is Sauron) created these evil people out of jealousy and hatred for the elves.
A few of them were captured in the bowels of his fortress Utumno, the Dark Lord thus subduing them. “Long and Learned Seconds”thereby creating “The Horrible Race of Orcs”. His goal: to turn these twisted ancient elves against their fellow elves, making the orcs the oldest enemies of the elven race on the battlefields of Middle-earth.
Even if Tolkien later gave another completely different explanation for the appearance of orcs, this remains the most common, especially in Peter Jackson’s films and the TV series The Rings of Power.
