Playbook is a tool to raise awareness about climate change on our screens.
Recently, a group of writers, artists, academics, and activists have come together to create Playbook, a non-profit consulting tool (supported by the NGO Good Energy and Bloomberg Philanthropies) whose purpose is objective to bring the real effects of climate change closer to the world of art. His idea is to help the people behind the fiction that we consume in cinema and television so that they dare to reflect climate change in their films and that they can do it accurately.
Today Mark Ruffalo, Rosario Dawson Y Adam McKay have applied in favor of this new tool, of whose diffusion they will be sponsors. For film, Playbook features comprehensive articles on the latest scientific and climatological discoveries, a catalog of narratively engaging climate impacts, and an assortment of character profiles at the forefront of the climate crisis. With them in hand, theoretically writing a film about global warming should be a piece of cake.
We tend to think that climate change is more present in our fictionbut publishes the Good Energy website, where Playbook is located, which according to a study conducted with the USC Media Impact Lab at the Normal Lear Center, in a sample of 37,453 scripts (published from 2016 to 2020), only 2.8% of them included keywords about climate change. Its goal is to increase this figure to 50% by 2025.
This is their motto: “This is what we know: facts don’t change people, stories do”. “Climate is the most important narrative of our time. And they don’t just have to be stories of loss and despair, but they can also be stories of bravery, humanity, big ideas and new possibilities for every community,” he said. Mark Ruffalo in an exclusive statement to Entertainment Weekly. “I hope all creators see themselves shaping this future and want to be part of this new wave of narratives; I hope that all producers want to support such a variety of storytellers, for the future we want.”
Adam McKaydirector of ‘Don’t look up’, which reminded us of the supine ineffectiveness of human beings in the face of disaster, added: “We have seen how the film has generated more conversation and protests to demand that governments look up. However, this is just one movie and we have a lot more to do. Now is the time for real global action. Time is running out, but we have the answers. We have the technology. We need to demand that governments around the world make climate change their priority. As filmmakers and creators, we must do our part to open up the discussions in the first place.”
For Rosario Dawsonwhom we recently saw in ‘The Boba Fett Book’ and ‘Dopesick: An Addiction Story’: “If we are going to continue telling authentic, inspiring stories that appeal to ‘I identify with that,’ we must incorporate the reality of the climate crisis into every stage of developmentbe it production, post-production, marketing and distribution”.
