Sauron in the Ring of Power: The creators of the Prime Video series explain their choices

Released last Friday on Amazon Prime Video, the final episode of the first season of Rings of Power was especially rich in revelations. Among all the surprises in store for fans in this eighth chapter, the showrunners unveiled Sauron’s identity.

Therefore, the Dark Lord has actually been hiding behind the human face of Halbrand, Galadriel’s companion since Episode 2 and the supposed king of the Southlands. A surprising turn of events for some, and sometimes disturbing for others, as it is a significant departure from Tolkien’s writings.

Indeed, in the original texts, Sauron, in the form of an elf named Anatari, presented himself to Celebrimbor to suggest to him the idea of forging the rings.

As they recently explained on the microphone vulnerabilityThe two creators of the series, Patrick McKay and JD Payne, decided to complicate things a little so that all viewers – including purists – have the right to be surprised:

“We didn’t want to create a situation where the part of the audience that was immersed in learning was six or seven episodes ahead of the characters.”they said.

“If deception was going to be a huge part of this journey, we wanted to preserve that experience for the readers of the books as well. We were interested in the idea that the shadow could take many forms.”

Still, the two showrunners wanted to keep the hint of Anatari’s journey through specific elements, or hints inserted into the dialogue of the final episode:

“A reference to gifts is a reference to Anatri”they explained. “But at the end of Season 1, there’s also the fact that the three rings were forged, and as the song Fiona Apple sings at the end of the season tells us, there are still seven left for dwarves, nine for men, and one for the Dark Lord. There are still gifts.

So Sauron is far from playing all the cards. No doubt he will at least assume another identity and return to deceive the Free People under other names (including Anatari) in future seasons.
