When journalist and screenwriter Mark Boal (on Elah Valley) returns from reporting in Iraq, he talks to Kathryn Bigelow about soldiers disarming bombs in a combat zone and volunteering for the kind of extremely dangerous mission they’re doing. The director understands that this is the subject of his new film.
The story of Demineurs focuses on the demining unit of the US Army and more specifically on Sergeant Will James, a hot-headed soldier who only feels alive when he is on the front lines. Brilliantly interpreted by Jeremy Renner, who was relatively unknown at the time, this hero with a complex psychology is fascinating. The film is also worth noting for its very realistic realization, the photograph of which is signed by Barry Ackroyd (a regular collaborator of Ken Loach and Paul Greengrass). Action scenes, sharp, shot on location with a shoulder camera, literally lower the viewer to the ground.
Brilliantly reinventing the war movie genre, Minesweepers is hailed by critics. It was nominated eight times at the 82nd Academy Awards, most notably competing with Avatar in the Best Picture category. If James Cameron’s feature film grossed $150 times more on American soil than Kathryn Bigelow’s, it is to him that precious statue belongs. As well as Best Director (Katherine Bigelow becomes the first woman to win this award), Best Original Screenplay, Best Sound, Best Editing and Best Sound Editing.
