I3P on TF1: How much is this new detective series with Marc Lavoine worth?

In Paris, if you have amnesia, if you have visions or if you show signs of delirium in the street, you will be taken to the psychiatric hospital of the police prefecture. With a discreet address, the I3P is led by Professor Matthias Bernard, a psychiatrist who has the authority to allow his patients to return to normal life, to take them to hospital, but also to hand them over to the police.

Unable to keep anyone longer than 24 hours, he always favors a humane approach to forced treatment, supported by psychiatrists Sophie Tran, Julien Sarment and young intern Sammy Jendub. Each day begins with the admission of a subject in crisis who is rushed to I3P.

Based on her testimony, Bernard and his close bodyguard lead the investigation, despite the systematic opposition of Commissioner Natalie Fontaine, who prefers that no files be added to her already high pile. After that, it’s a race against time to solve the mystery of each patient’s life.

Jean-Christophe Granger is the creator of I3P and is writing the script for six episodes of the series. Each survey is divided into two parts of 52 minutes each. Directed by Jeremy Minoui.

Singer Marc Lavoine (Kepler(s), The School of Life) stars as Professor Matthias Bernard’s bluesy undertones. The hero’s colleagues in the infirmary are played by Claire Tran (Missions, Thanksgiving), Michael Chirignan (HPI, Notre Dame is Burning), Walid Ben Mabrouk (Le Bureau des Légendes) and Camin (Bienvenue à Marly-Gomont).

On the police side, viewers find Barbara Schultz (Le Substitute, Gloria) playing Commissioner Natalie Fontaine. Johann Dionet (Lupin, The Escape) and Jean-Philippe Ricci (Marianne, Le temps est Assassin) play his sidekicks at the police station.

This first I3P investigation introduces the eccentric Mathias Bernard and his team of psychiatrists working in Paris. They urgently need to take care of a strange homeless patient who seems to be out of touch with reality…

In fact, this individual (to whom Alain-Fabien Delon gives his features) does not have this appearance at all in normal times, and here he is disguised as a tramp! This one belongs to a disturbing group of killers who dress up as iconic commedia dell’arte figures (Harlequin, Pierrot, Scaramucci and Polichinelli) to kill the homeless with complete impunity.

When this man runs away from work, Mathias and his associates are not aware that their patient was wearing a costume and are therefore worried. Thus, they decide to start an investigation on their side, since Commissioner Nathalie Fontaine refused to help Matthias when he asked for it.

Very down-to-earth, he did not consider the interlocutor’s request, whose character he considers too capricious… Determined to find out what is happening in the capital, will Mathias manage to unmask these psychopaths?

In I3P we find the paw of Jean-Christophe Granger, writer of – among others – Purple Rivers (recently adapted into the series France 2). Mysterious and haunting, this exploration explores, as always for the author, the dark side of the human soul.

To counter this disturbing plot, Mathias, the main character played by Marc Lavoine, brings lightness to the fiction. Lunar, extravagant and often obsessive, this doctor’s unique approach and unusual behavior in his professional environment can sometimes irritate us…

But even if the singer seems to be having fun with this performance, we must admit that this type of hero, out of place in a system with ultra-strict rules and strict procedures, has been seen very often in recent years. As a result, Mathias sometimes becomes annoying…

Throughout the investigation, he is also plagued by violent memories that surface. Haunted by this difficult past that still haunts him today, this hidden part of his existence contrasts with the eccentric side of the character and adds to the mystery… without charming us. Regardless, fans of Marc Lavoine will undoubtedly appreciate a different take on his I3P.

Barbara Schulz, on the other hand, is quite convincing as the gruff cop. The difference in Nathalie’s temperament compared to Matthias makes it possible to anchor the fiction to a certain realism without falling too far into a simple caricature of psychorigidity as opposed to frivolity.

Jérémy Minui’s direction is neat and the series is well shot. For example, it offers viewers wonderful images of the city of Paris. The staging of the resolution of this investigation releases some emotion, and the dynamic between our duo finally becomes a little more interesting. What would you like to see next?

At the moment, we don’t know when TF1 will decide to schedule the next two I3P surveys… Unfortunately, we’re in no particular rush to find out. The entire season is already available on Salto anyway.
