Netflix has a catalog full of productions based on true crimes, such as “Dahmer: An American Cannibal,” a series that premiered in September and won audiences by telling the story of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims. Now, a new movie that uses another serial killer as inspiration comes to streaming.
This is “The Nurse of the Night”, a film with Oscar winners Eddie Redmayne and Jessica Chastain, which premiered on Netflix last Wednesday (26). Chastain’s character is nurse Amy Loughren, who becomes suspicious of her new colleague Charles Cullen, played by Redmayne.
The nurse comes to believe that her colleague may be responsible for the mysterious patient deaths that begin to emerge in the hospital where they work. She then puts herself in danger to unravel this macabre story and find out if her colleague is a murderer.
“The Night Nurse” is directed by Tobias Lindhom and the screenplay is by Krysty Wilson-Cairns, and is based on the book by journalist Charles Graeber, “The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness and Murder”. The film is available on Netflix.
The real story behind the Netflix movie
The film describes the case of one of the greatest serial killers in US history, Charles Cullen, played by Redmayne. Cullen, also known as the Angel of Death, is a former nurse who confessed to killing 40 patients during a 16-year period in which she worked in various medical institutions in the US state of New Jersey.
Jailed since 2003, Cullen was sentenced to 11 life sentences in 2006 and escaped the death penalty for cooperating in the investigation. Although he had confessed to his crimes of him, the serial killer stated at the trial that he considered himself an angel of mercy, who tried to end the suffering of his patients by killing them.
To kill the patients, the killer administered lethal doses of drugs such as insulin and digoxin, which caused the victims to overdose. Despite him having confessed to 40 murders, Cullen’s death toll is believed to be even higher and he is considered to be the most prolific serial killer in the state of New Jersey.
