George RR Martin wished “The House of the Dragon” had started 40 years earlier

“Fire and Blood”, George RR Martin’s book on which “House of the Dragon” is based, follows the story of House Targaryen and begins many years before the period featured in the HBO series. So choosing when exactly the series would start was a challenge, and the author revealed that he claimed the story started 40 years earlier.

“House of the Dragon” begins with a flashback about a decade before the main events of the series begin. The flashback showed the Grand Council of Harrenhal, where King Jaehaerys needs to appoint a new heir after the deaths of his sons, Aemon and Baelon. The nominees are Rhaenys (Eve Best), daughter of Aemon, and Viserys (Paddy Considine), son of Baelon, with the board opting for Viserys, with the male line prevailing in succession.

But there was an idea, defended by the author, that things started earlier. “I don’t know if I should reveal it,” Martin said in a recent interview with publisher Penguin Random House, where he talked about “House of the Dragon”. “That [início] it was not transmitted by some ancient Greek muse. We, myself and the other writers, have discussed a lot about where to start this story. “

He also continued: “[Uma] possibility we discussed – which was actually my favorite possibility, but nobody liked it but me [risos]. I would have started much earlier. I would have started 40 years earlier with what I would call “The Heir and the Spare”, in which Jaehaerys’ two sons, Aemon and Baelon, are alive. And we see friendship, but also rivalry, between the two sides of the big house, “Martin explained.

“You know, Aemon accidentally dies when a crossbowman from Myr accidentally shoots him at Tarth and then Jaehaerys has to decide who becomes the new heir. She is the daughter of the firstborn who just died [Rhaenys] or is it the second child, who has children of his own and is a man and is only a teenager? ” continued the author. Things became further complicated with the death of the second son and the succession became more confused, with no direct heirs to the throne.

“But then you’d be 40 years older and you’d have even more time jumps and you’d have even more casting changes and, uh, yeah, I was the only one who was really excited about it,” Martin said.

More time skips and cast changes could really be a big deal for fans, with the first season already full spanning 20 years, which has bothered some people. Although “House of the Dragon” began this way, the series will no longer have time skips in the future, with the current actors living their characters “to the end,” according to showrunner Ryan Condal.

Recently, Casey Bloys, HBO Max’s Chief Content Officer, confirmed that season 2 of “House of the Dragon” will not arrive in 2023, with a 2024 premiere more likely, although no official date has been released until Now.
