Horror movies to watch as a family: perfect for a nightmare-free Halloween marathon

There’s nothing like celebrating Halloween with a horror movie marathon. However, sometimes, these should be a little creepy, so you can watch them with the whole family.

“Spirited Away,” available on Netflix

This Miyazaki classic is perfect for transporting families to new worlds filled with imagination.

Chihiro is a Japanese girl who, together with her parents, visits an abandoned amusement park. What seemed like a great family adventure turns into the little girl’s mission to save her parents from spirit beings.

“Ghostbusters,” available on HBO

An ideal choice to introduce the youngest members of the family to classic horror films.

After losing their jobs, a group of scientists form a team to hunt down ghosts and fight the evil forces that haunt New York.

‘Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit’, available on HBO

Following the comic tone of the epic, this family horror film follows the adventure of Wallace and Gromit as they try to catch a beast that has been eating the town’s crops.

“The Nightmare Before Christmas,” available on Disney+

If there’s one pop culture character that’s a constant presence at Halloween year after year, it’s Jack Skellington, the star of this Tim Burton story.

This skull lives in Halloween Town and thinks everything is perfect there. However, one day he enters the town of Christmas and falls so in love with everything that happens there that he seeks to replicate it in his own town.

“The NIMH Secret”

A mouse widow’s son falls ill, forcing her to embark on a quest to seek help from a colony of highly intelligent rats.

But his path will be full of difficulties and moments of fear.

‘The witches’

Little Luke and his family go on a trip to visit his grandmother. Once on vacation, he discovers a secret group of witches trying to turn all the children into mice, and he has to do everything he can to stop it.

‘Coraline’

For kids who can already tolerate stronger horror movies. The story follows the adventure of Coraline, a girl who moves into a new house with her parents and discovers that one of the doors in the place transports her to an alternate dimension in which her parents are everything she would like.

It sounds great at first, but you’ll soon realize there’s a price to pay if you want to keep them.

“Para-Norman”

Norman Babcock is a special boy because he can talk to the dead and sometimes he even prefers to have conversations with them rather than the living.

‘Frankenweenie’, available on Disney +

Another one from Tim Burton has been added to the list of horror movies to watch with the family. This 2012 film is about Victor, a boy who decides to bring his dog Spark back to life after he is run over by a car.

His experiment is successful, until the dog starts causing unusual problems in his master’s neighborhood.

‘Coco’, available on Disney +

While this film isn’t horror per se, it does deal with another tradition closely associated with Halloween: the Day of the Dead.

The story revolves around Miguel, a Mexican boy who dreams of becoming a musician despite his family’s restrictions.

On the Day of the Dead, he visits his town’s pantheon and accidentally enters the world of the dead, where he learns more about this tradition and his family’s history.
