Netflix stands out for its huge catalog of documentaries and documentary series focusing on true crimes. With such a wide variety of productions, some may end up forgotten. This is the case of “Grégory”, an excellent documentary miniseries from 2019 that should receive more attention from those interested in the subgenre.
Streaming documentaries such as “Making a Murderer”, together with other productions such as the podcasts “O Caso Evandro” and “Modus Operandi”, have made true crime grow in the interest of the Brazilian public in recent years. Among streaming platforms, Netflix is by far the one with the best and most complete catalog of documentaries, series and films that feature or are inspired by real cases.
Documentaries like “The Keepers”, “The Staircase”, “Rezar e Obedecer” and “A Garota da Foto” are some of the highlights of the genre on the platform. But Netflix also has the five-part production “Grégory” in its catalog, released in 2019, focused on the case of the murder of the 4-year-old boy Grégory Villemin, found dead in the Vologne river, in France, in 1984.
What follows is a sordid tale spanning three decades. With family feuds, multiple twists and the sinister presence of an anonymous caller known as ‘The Raven’, ‘Grégory’ is a gripping story that continually surprises in scope. A significant portion of the series is devoted to solving the murder mystery itself, but like the best documentaries, it examines the broader and more challenging questions brought to light by this brutal and gruesome crime.
Without getting too much into the plot of this story, “Grégory” has the good sense to explore not only the crime itself, but the ways in which the French media have chosen to cover it and the continued harassment suffered by the boy’s parents after the murder . It’s a crime documentary like many you’ve seen before, but it’s enhanced by the delicate way it explores the limits of media invasion and the impact of sexism on reporting.
