At eight episodes, the Netflix series looked promising, but it sucks from start to finish, underwhelming with a weak, muddled and poorly executed script.
It is nothing new that the Netflix has invested in South Korean productions for its catalogue. After the success of Round 6the company has launched other series such as The three sisters🇧🇷 An extraordinary lawyer🇧🇷 Tomorrow And Someone🇧🇷 The latter has attracted attention for telling a story that mixes drama, suspense and romance and for using technology as a thread of the plot.
The story consists of eight chapters and follows Kim Seom (Kang Hye-rim), a nerdy young woman who develops an artificial intelligence to help people communicate in group chats. One day she presents her project at a science fair and a wealthy woman takes an interest in it.
promising idea
This is how his idea turned into an app and Somebody was born, a dating app that is successful in South Korea and is used by different types of users. One such user is Seong Yun-o (Kim Young-kwang), a handsome and seductive young man who creates multiple accounts to hook up with women and then kill them.
He has many mobile phones and telephone chips in his drawer to keep an account always active to connect to the application and thus lure his victims.
It is from this plot that the story begins to develop. The first episode feels a bit confusing, as it presents the characters bluntly, without putting them into context and without explaining how they relate to each other.
At one point, Kim is starting to develop his app and at another, he’s already talking to Seong. How it happened is a mystery, as the Netflix series doesn’t care about creating a timeline or giving answers to the audience.
This being the first episode, however, it’s easy to overlook and give it one more chance Someone, after all, there are still seven chapters to go. And this is how the series instigates the viewer to press play on the next episode.
Many questions and no answers
The second episode manages to be even more confusing than the first and introduces new characters, such as the policeman Yeong Gi-eun (Kim Su-yeon) and the shaman Im Mok-won (Kim Yong-ji), both friends of the protagonist.
At one point, Gi-eun, who uses a wheelchair, becomes involved with the homicidal psychopath and goes to meet him in a deserted place. There she has a sexual relationship with him and she is left to starve, since the boy has thrown away his wheelchair.
It is from this moment that the viewer begins to give up on the series and understands that the narrative will not go anywhere. In addition to the text not having the slightest coherence, offering several loose scenes, the development of the characters is really bad.
Imagine an experienced police officer meeting a man he doesn’t know in a deserted place. This aberration is only the first in the series, and it is worth mentioning that after being abandoned and almost dead, she agrees to meet him again and, once again, she warns no one.
Not to mention that there seems to be no police in South Korea, because it’s not that the psychopath is the smartest person in the world: he leaves several outstanding issues yet no authority finds him or even investigates him.
The reason for the murders
If you’ve come this far trying to figure out what drives Seong Yun-o to kill his strangled victims, sadly you’ll be left curious. The series doesn’t reveal why he seeks people to kill, it just presents him as a psychopath who feels good about killing someone.
The killer’s date with Kim Seom
One of the rare emotional moments in the storyline of Someone is when the psychopath meets the protagonist. That doubt hangs in the air as to whether he will kill her or if she will escape. But what happens is none of this. Seong Yun-o reveals to Kim what he does with her and says that he would like to kill people with her, to which the girl replies that she doesn’t care and that she would like to do the same with him too.
At that moment the viewer no longer knows if Kim is also a psychopath or if she is blinded by love. The character had everything to be well crafted, as she is a woman on the autistic spectrum, successful and self-possessed, but her text brings her down, as she does all the other characters. There is no one who stands out.
Good performances don’t save the plot, but they help tell the story
It cannot be denied that, despite being a failure, Someone It has a top-notch team of actors. All perform well, even with such a weak texture. The highlight is for the protagonist, Kim; and for the antagonist, Seong, played by actor Kim Young-kwang. He brings to life a perfect psychopath, dosing moments of drama and euphoria with great precision.
Another actress who stands out is Kim Yong-ji, who lives the shaman. Despite her being explored little in the plot, her scenes are good and a little more coherent.
predictable outcome
After Seong Yun-o killed some women, he got involved with the policewoman and the protagonist, it was expected that his end would be behind bars or dead, and that’s what happens.

Kim Seom despite still having feelings for the boy, decides to kill him by cutting out his eyes and neck. Thus, the series ends after eight chapters and leaves the audience with no expectation that there will be a new season (thank goodness!).
Is anyone worth watching?
With a rather confusing and poorly executed plot, Someone is definitely a negative surprise in the Netflix catalog. The series also had an interesting synopsis, but with each chapter it gets worse and worse. It’s worth commending the efforts of the actors to deliver something minimally enjoyable, but it still wasn’t enough.
Like this, Someone it’s definitely not worth playing, but if you want to give it a chance, you can watch it Netflix🇧🇷
