Car of the Italian diplomat in Athens set on fire

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A car belonging to the first adviser of the Italian embassy in Athens, Susanna Schlein, was set on fire earlier this Friday (2).

According to the Italian foreign ministry, the diplomat was awakened by the explosion and even found an unexploded Molotov cocktail next to another car. The first vehicle was completely destroyed.

“I express my personal solidarity and that of the Italian government with the first adviser of the Italian embassy in Athens, Susanna Schlein, and my deep concern for the attack that hit her, probably of anarchist origin. I am following the case with the utmost attention Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said so in a note.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called the diplomat to express solidarity and will travel to Athens to meet her.

The Greek foreign ministry condemned the attack in a statement. “Unacceptable and reprehensible actions such as this cannot in any way affect the excellent relations and the ancient ties of friendship between Greece and its Italian ally”, reads the note.

Athens police are investigating the case, but so far no group has claimed responsibility. Susanna Schlein is the sister of MP Elly Schlein, a member of the new generation of the Democratic Party (PD), the main centre-left force in Italy.
