HBO Max has released the subtitled trailer for “The Last of Us,” a series based on the popular game of the same name, to accompany the show’s panel at CCXP.

As in Naughty Dog’s game, the story takes place 20 years after the destruction of civilization by a virus and follows Joel, a hardened survivor, who is given a mission to smuggle a teenage girl named Ellie out of a quarantine zone to distant scientists. The girl may hold the key to healing humanity. But what begins as a small job soon becomes a brutal and harrowing journey as the two traverse the United States and come to depend more and more on each other for survival.

The production features Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey (both former “Game of Thrones”) as post-apocalyptic survivors Joel and Ellie, respectively, and the cast also includes Gabriel Luna (“Terminator: Dark Fate”), Nico Parker (” Dumbo”), Murray Bartlett (“The White Lotus”), Merle Dandridge (“The Flight Attendant”), Storm Reid (“Euphoria”), Anna Torv (“Mindhunter”), Lamar Johnson (“The Hate That Happened”) Sow”), Jeffrey Pierce (“Castle Rock”), Keivonn Woodard (“Fractal”) and Nick Offerman (“Parks and Recreation”).

The adaptation is signed by Craig Mazin, author of the award-winning miniseries “Chernobyl”, and the series will be directed by the Russian Kantemir Balagov (awarded at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival for “A Tall Woman”), Bosnian Jasmila Žbanić (from “Quo Vadis , Aida?”, Best Film in Europe at the European Academy Awards) and the Iranian Ali Abbasi (Best Director in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival in 2018 for the disturbing “Border”, also known as ” Grans”).

The premiere is scheduled for January 15.
