President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has scheduled his first ministerial meeting for next Friday, where he intends to begin articulating the government, following public disagreements between ministers.
The decision on the ministerial meeting was made on Tuesday evening, during a meeting with the civil housing minister, Rui Costa.
“The meeting is for an alignment of government actions and an alignment of procedures, ensuring coordinated and articulated action by management, guaranteeing transversal governance. Ensuring method, guidelines and that there is transversality of the government”, he Costa told reporters before the ceremony Marina Silva assumes the post of head of the Ministry of the Environment.
The ministerial meeting had already been scheduled – last week Lula said he intended to hold a ministerial meeting immediately after taking office – but it should serve the president to smooth over the difficulties after recent public disagreements between ministers.
On the first day of his administration, Lula renewed the fuel tax exemption, despite Finance Minister Fernando Haddad having asked the previous government not to renew the measure, which was due to expire at the end of last year.
This Wednesday, the ministers of the Civil House, Rui Costa, and of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, denied that the government is considering revising the pension reform approved in 2019, after the Minister of Social Security, Carlos Lupi, had criticized the day before what he called “anti-reform”, signaling that he could discuss changes.
According to a source, Lula should also ask ministers to prepare measures in every area that can be adopted in the first 100 days of government to start unblocking the country, especially in the area of infrastructure and social actions.
MEETING WITH GOVERNORS
Towards the end of the month, on the 27th, the president will meet the governors of the 26 states and the Federal District at Palazzo Planalto to discuss a federal agenda of common interest, thus fulfilling one of the most repeated promises of the campaign.
“The order of the day is the return to the federative relations of the Union with the states and municipalities that have been paralyzed all these years and we intend to institutionalize the return, establish the flow,” Costa said.
According to the minister, before then Lula will travel to a Brazilian state – still to be defined – and will make his first international trip, to Argentina.
Costa said the intention of the meeting is to provide “greater efficiency” in governing, with governors making requests to the federal executive.
The minister also said that it is possible that, before this meeting, there will be a preparatory meeting in the presence of the Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, with the regions, the regional consortia.
When asked if the meeting with the governors will talk about infrastructure projects, the minister answered yes. “On the 27th we will talk about all the possibilities. We will have regular meetings, not just one meeting, we want thematic meetings”, he specified.
