House of the Dragon: Writer Teases Cruel Season 2 Sequel

Who has read the book Fire & Blood, which serves as the basis for the series House of the Dragon, will understand the following sentence: “Blood and Cheese” is coming. According to the comments of screenwriter Sara Hess, the cruel moment of George RR Martin’s work should take place in the second season of the HBO series.

We’ll explain the scene in question in a thread below, but until you get to the “What is Blood and Cheese?” thread, you can not worry about spoilers for the story in question. For those who want to avoid discovering moments from the future of House of the Dragonjust know that this is extremely brutal storytelling, even by Westeros standards.

Dubbed Blood and Cheese, the events are part of a black-against-green revenge plot following the death of Rhaenyra’s son Lucerys Velaryon, shown in the final episode of the series’ first season.

“We are currently writing the final episode of season two,” screenwriter Sara Hess told a reporter from Variety, when asked if Blood and Cheese was already in the script. “I don’t think you will be disappointed.”

Although Lucerys death is present in the first season of House of the Dragon, the series altered what in the book was on purpose for an accident. In the series, Aemond Targaryen loses control of his dragon, Vhagar, which results in the death of both Lucerys and her dragon. In the final scene of the season, we see a grieving Rhaenyra appearing to be furious, foreshadowing her fury in the production’s future.

The complete first season of House of the Dragon is available on HBO Max. If you don’t want spoilers from the book Fogo & Sangue, the text can stop here for you.

What is Blood and Cheese?

In case you are curious to know exactly what Blood and Cheese is, from here we will present you some spoilers for the book, and consequently for the future of House of the Dragon (although changes do occur between book and series).

Rhaenyra appears furious in the final scene of the season, but it has yet to be revealed how the queen will avenge her son’s death. But, with the next season following Fire & Blood, revenge will come with a disturbing event hosted by Daemon, the Queen’s husband.

The question really shouldn’t be “what” is Blood and Cheese, but “who?” Cheese is a rat hunter, who teams up with Blood, a butcher under the orders of Mysaria, the white worm, who works for Daemon. Together, Blood and Cheese enter the Red Keep through a secret passageway that leads to Alicent Hightower’s room.

There they bind Alicent and await the arrival of their daughter Helaena, married to her brother and King Aegon II. Together they had three children: two boys and a girl. The youngest son is Maelor, while the eldest is named Jaehaerys, who is also heir to the throne of Aegon II.

Blood and Cheese are in the Red Keep with one goal: “an eye for an eye, son for son,” Daemon explains in a message to the Black Council. “Lucerys will be avenged.” When Helaena arrives in the room with her children, they arrest her and Cheese tells Helaena that she must choose one of the children to die.

Finally, after several threats to the princess if she doesn’t make a choice, she opts for the death of her youngest son Maelor. But Blood does not follow Helaena’s recommendation and takes the head of Jaehaerys, the eldest son and heir to the throne. While Cheese escapes and is not seen, Blood is caught trying to bring Daemon proof of the young prince’s death.

The series has already used the narrative trick known as foreshadowing to pave the way for the plot of Blood and Cheese. In the fourth episode of the first season of House of the DragonDaemon teaches Rhaenyra about a secret passage leading out of the castle, which may have been a way to establish that the passage exists for the future.
