Twitter hacked, email addresses of 200 million users leaked, says researcher

The email addresses of more than 200 million Twitter users have been stolen and posted on a hacker forum, a security researcher said on Thursday.

The theft will lead to “many instances” of attempted digital attacks, wrote Alon Gal, co-founder of Israeli electronic security monitoring firm Hudson Rock.

Twitter has not commented on the matter. It is unclear whether the social network has taken action to investigate or remedy the attack.

Reuters has been unable to independently verify whether the data posted on the forum is genuine. Screenshots from the forum, where the data appeared on Wednesday, have been leaked online.

There are no clues as to the identity or whereabouts of the hacker(s) behind the data theft. The crime may have happened in 2021, before Elon Musk took over Twitter in 2022.

Claims about the size and scope of the attack initially varied, with accounts in December stating that 400 million email addresses and phone numbers had been stolen.
