Santos made his debut in the 2023 Paulista Championship on Saturday. Peixe received Mirassol and provided a mix of emotions to the more than 13,000 fans in Vila Belmiro during the 2-1 victory.
Even before the ball rolled, Santos was already immersed in an unforgettable experience. It was the first game after the death of Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pelé. To honor the King, the club organized a beautiful party.
A light show was held at the stadium. The former player’s signature, a crown and “1940-infinity” were formed on the lawn. A throne was placed in the middle of the field. Former players Lima, Clodoaldo, Edu and Manoel Maria have taken a crown to the throne. Two beautiful photos of the ace have been extended into the sequence.
Fans even unfurled a banner with the words “Viva o Rei” and “Pelé Eterno”. Finally, thousands of white balloons passed through Urbano Caldeira.
Emotion took over the Vila, who, if she were a human being, would also have trembled, as well as everyone present.
However, it was enough for the referee to blow his whistle for emotion to become increasingly sidelined. At first there was apprehension, which soon turned to anger. Santos failed to hold the ball and saw Mirassol squeeze. Then, at 26 minutes, silence. Danielzinho made it 1-0 for the visitors.
The revolt was even greater among the fans, who no longer had the patience for more backward passes. But it was amidst the curses of a retirement for João Paulo that the Peixe fan vibrated for the first time in the night. Luiz Flávio de Oliveira stopped the match to go to the VAR and scored a penalty for the hosts. Marcos Leonardo did not forgive and eased the pain of the Santos player in the first half.
Upon returning from the break, the uprising was with the wax of the Mirassol players. After 45 minutes of apprehension, with some having already accepted an equaliser, another whirlwind of emotions arrived in the added time.
In the 46th minute a penalty for Santos drives the fans crazy in the stands. Two minutes later, however, the cries of joy give way to curses at the referee, who cancels the call. Even the anger, however, passed quickly. This is because, at the age of 50, Lucas Braga made Vila Belmiro throb with euphoria: 2-1 for Odair Hellmann’s team.
In the end, the Santos fan left Urbano Caldeira saying he had a “feeling of joy” for the three points won in honor of King Pelé, even though he “deserves more”.
