The second episode of the series The Last of Us premieres this Sunday night (22nd) on HBO, bringing more action beyond the barrier of health, with Joel and Tess embarking on a journey to carry young Ellie to her destiny and receive her promised reward.
The episode begins with Joel and Tess’s distrust of Ellie, given the revelation at the end of the previous episode. Ellie enters a world unknown to her, while the duo who accompany her know their ways around an extremely dangerous area.
With numerous extremely tense scenes and stunning cinematography, Episode 2 introduced even more to the universe of The Last of Usas well as offering a look from another perspective at the beginning of the mushroom epidemic Cordyceps. This time, the introduction of the episode showed Ibu Ratna, a mycology professor at the University of Indonesia, having her first contact with the infection in humans.
The advice offered by the teacher, after being presented with the horror of the fungus infection, is seen in the present of the series, with Ellie asking about a crater. The group encounters obstacles on their road journey, in which they try to avoid the perils of the shortest route to their destinations, in the format of a suspenseful scene.
Indeed, suspense is key to the episode as a whole, with Ellie stepping into the unknown and Joel and Tess no less fearful of what might happen at every twist, every trip and noise made unintentionally.
Even greater obstacles confront them as they progress on their journeys, and the suspense turns into a sincere sacrifice, despite how little we know about these characters. The series works so well to bring the audience closer to these people, that even two episodes each are enough to understand what they are feeling in each moment.
Following a great introductory episode with an even better episode 2.
The first two episodes of The Last of Us are available on HBO Max. Episode three premieres next Sunday (29th), at 11 p.m., on HBO and HBO Max.
