The unions want the support of the US government in crisis; minister cites ‘corporate irresponsibility’

The country’s major union centers released a joint statement on Monday in defense of the direct participation of the Ministry of Labor in the judicial recovery process of the Americans, which took place after the revelation at the beginning of the month of at least 20 billion reais in accounting problems.

In a meeting with the unions, Labor Minister Luiz Marinho said that “apparently there may have been corporate irresponsibility” in the Americanas crisis, but said that “it is essential to be able to preserve the continuity of economic activity of Lojas Americanas, regardless of who is the controller”.

Americanas has among its main shareholders the billionaires Jorge Paulo Lemann, Carlos Sicupira and Marcel Telles.

Eight union entities, including CUT, Força Sindical, UGT, signed the request presented this Monday to the minister. The power plants want to preserve jobs at the retailer, which has more than 44,000 workers, as well as “hundreds of thousands” in the supplier network.

“For these reasons, the power stations have asked the Minister of Labor and Employment that the government participate directly in the process with the aim of establishing a tripartite dialogue and total transparency, in what is one of the largest entrepreneurial recovery processes of the country,” the entities said.

The minister specified that he had met the trade union centers to listen to the workers’ requests and specified that the government “doesn’t have a solution to present to you (the workers) but we want to reason with you”.

“BIRDS OF PREY”

Marinho said that the Americanas crisis “also affects the economic area of government … But the problems of the banks cannot be greater than the problems related to work and employment, with thousands of people and families that could be impacted”, he said.

“We need to find a way to make shareholders accountable, who had to be ready to make this hole,” said the minister, hoping that Americanas’ problems would be limited to the retailer and not to the sector as a whole.

“It seems to be an isolated problem for Lojas Americanas who must have had some raptor who found a loophole to do something … and to become more billionaires than they already were,” Marinho said without naming names. “Certainly the supervisory bodies… Cvm… it is necessary to observe whether there has been any fraud”.

The centrals have called an event for Friday in Rio de Janeiro to draw attention to the situation of the workers of the retail chain, which has filed for judicial recovery under the burden of more than 40 billion reais of debt.
