“Henry was never the one.”
DC Universe boss James Gunn has tried to set the record straight on what led to Henry Cavill’s departure as Superman..
Fans were stunned when Cavill announced that his recent cameo as the Man of Steel in ‘Black Adam’ would not lead to a full-scale return within the company, after meeting with new DC Studios co-CEOs Gunn and Peter Safran.
Since then, Gunn has confirmed that he and Peter Safran are working on an all-new introduction for Superman in their DC Universe.which will be released in 2025 and focuses on balancing the character’s “Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.”
Speaking to Deadline, Gunn disputed that Cavill was actually left out of the new ‘Superman: Legacy’ because he was never intended to be included.
“We didn’t fire Henry. Henry was never chosen. He appeared in a cameo and that was the end of his story.“said the new co-CEO.
“A lot of people made assumptions that weren’t true, but for me, it’s about who I want to cast as Superman and who the filmmakers want to cast. For me, for this story, it’s not Henry. And I like Henry, he’s a great guy. I also believe that he has been mistreated by many people, including former directors of this company. But this Superman is not Henry for several reasons.“.
When it was announced that he would no longer be playing Superman, Cavill encouraged fans to give Gunn and Safran’s vision for the character a try.
“The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that,” Cavill wrote on Instagram. “James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them, and everyone involved in the new universe, the best of luck and the happiest of fortunes.”
Among the new films that Gunn has announced with Peter Safran, are, in addition to ‘Superman: Legacy’, more films like ‘The Brave and the Bold’, about Batman. He has also announced new series, such as ‘Booster Gold’, ‘Paradise Lost (Wonder Woman)’, or ‘Green Lantern’ among others.
In addition to these new projects, the sequels to ‘Joker’ and ‘Batman’ continue in another vein apart from the established projects by Gunn and Safran.
