The Chamber approves the appointment of the deputy supported by Lira as minister of the TCU

Unsurprisingly, Federal Deputy Jhonatan de Jesus (Republicanos-RR) had his name approved by the Chamber of Deputies to take up a ministerial vacancy at the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU). The deputy received 239 votes. The re-elected Speaker of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), supported him in the negotiations to secure his re-election. The MP’s appointment also had the backing of the Centrão and PT parties, which are trying to attract Republicans to the base of the government. At age 39, Jhonatan can remain in the House for more than 30 years, as TCU ministers retire at the age of 75.

Despite Lira’s approval, Jonathan’s lead was not great. The runner-up, former deputy Fabio Ramalho, had 174 votes, deputy Soraya Santos (PL-RJ), had 75. The nomination will still be submitted to the Senate.

Deputy Johnatan and his father, Senator Mecias de Jesus (Republicanos-RR), would appoint the last three directors of the Yanomami Special Indigenous Health District (Dsei-Y). The territory was the subject of an investigation by the Federal Police at the end of last year which ascertained fraud in the purchase of medicines. The senator is the author of the bill authorizing research and mining on indigenous lands, an issue considered sensitive by the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The president recently visited the Yanomami reservation and said he witnessed “genocide” there.

This Wednesday, 1st, the Court started the audit to evaluate the causes of vulnerability of the Yanomami people. Vital do Rêgo, president of the institution, will visit the area next Wednesday. Even so, the PT joined the bloc of 12 other parties and maintained its support for Jhonatan, who succeeds minister Ana Arraes, the first woman appointed by the House, who has retired.
