Del Rey, who hasn’t felt horny in over a decade, has had a rough patch, which finally ended three months ago. “You can pray and pray for relief, but without explanation, suddenly everything takes off,” said the singer. The discouragement started with the criticism he received early in his career, with his debut album he born to Die (2012).

According to Rolling Stone, despite the good reception it received among fans, hip hop-inspired orchestral pop was frowned upon by music journalists of the time, which blew up the artist. “I thought, ‘This sounds very different now. The ballads were like pop hits.’ So instead of being rated as an everyday performer based on reason, I was rated at a standard level, which was challenging.” Lana remembered. “Dealing with such harsh criticism makes it happily difficult to move forward.”

For the singer perhaps the cultural change of society, now more open to issues such as mental health and trauma, may have contributed to her happiness. “It’s almost like nobody can do anything wrong unless you’re Kanye talking about the Nazis, which, you know, is a problem.” she said, referring to the rapper’s controversial lines Kanye West.

“But other than that, you can say, ‘Well, when I was 10, a tree fell and I’ve felt like I can’t walk to that store ever since…’ Everyone has these specific but nuanced stories that are universal to people. people. I think it has to do with the change and softening of culture, without my knowledge.”

CONTROVERSIAL REPORTS

from the album ultraviolence, released in 2014, Del Rey began receiving mixed reviews and was accused of romanticizing abusive relationships. However, this was a way for the singer to expose what she experienced and felt. “One thing I’ve never gotten rid of is these normal but controversial relationships,” Lana explained.

“It’s not like when you become a singer that people start being nice to you. It never happens. People are still themselves. I think that’s why some find my work polarizing, because either you were in a conflicted dynamic in relationships family and interpersonal, or you haven’t been. So if you haven’t been, maybe use the words and phrases I’ve heard: “glorifying submission”, “forced fragility”. Ok, I would call it seeing the light at the end of the tunnels, perhaps?”

“You’re writing about what happened, but you’re trying to build yourself up, maybe melodically in the chorus,” Lana said.

Lana says one relationship in particular made her realize she was in a toxic relationship. “The class was so shocking and I couldn’t even ease my pain. But I realized that only a person with that specific appearance, height and cheerful disposition they thought had, which gave the impression that I wasn’t the positive person, just that kind of person could make me realize that I needed a foundation, so that I can always come back to myself.”

When asked why romantic love is so present in her work, Lana replies: “Everyone reconnects in some way. Some people reconnect through work, travel. I think the way I find myself, learn more about myself, is to be with other people. On the romantic side of things, if you’re monogamous and it’s just one person, there’s a lot of importance to that.”

DID YOU KNOW THERE IS A TUNNEL UNDER OCEAN BLVD

Your new album, Did you know there is a tunnel under Ocean Blvd, brings a more direct and raw version of Del Rey. The songs, as highlighted Jack Antonoffare often accompanied by a “voice of God, joy and hope”. On the runway UNWrecently released, the music producer — who has worked on a few tracks — admits: “It’s weird not knowing how you’re supposed to feel.”

“That feeling continues throughout the record. You could dissect the sounds, whether they’re from gospel or old-fashioned synths. But in the studio, it was about finding what was shocking at the time.”

The album title refers to an actual tunnel located under Ocean Boulevard in downtown Los Angeles in Long Beach. In the late 1960s it was closed to the public, but before that it served as an underground access to the beach and sellers of cotton candy and souvenirs worked there. The title idea didn’t have to sound so literal, as Del Rey explains: “Would it be a troubling concept to be locked up with all these wonderful things, with no access to anyone but family?”

“It was a doubt, because it’s something very plausible to happen with music, with people’s perception of what music can be”he told Rolling Stone. “There would come a point where work would turn me into a hijacked ship, and only my family would have access to this metaphorical tunnel.”

Dedicated to family, the record was inspired by people Lana admires, be they artists like the novelist Silvia Plath, or people in your daily life, like your friends. By the way, according to the singer, some lines of the songs came from real conversations with her friends. “If they think my music is good, it’s because other people have been involved in the songs. Lots of people”, to assert.

According to the publication, Mike Ermosa, the ex-boyfriend of Lana Del Rey, participated as producer of the album and was one of the responsible for the existence of the album. Every Sunday he played guitar with Del Rey, which he secretly recorded. At one point, he asked her to sing along and “Did You Know” came out.

“Music is like a little bird that’s always on my shoulder. Even when I take a break, someone comes along and plays a little song and I’m like, ‘Shit, this is happening again.'”

The former couple recorded songs on their cell phone every Sunday they could, five of which are on the album. “When we finished, I thought, ‘At some point we’re going to have to talk about the fact that you made half of this album.'” said the singer.

Lana, describing the Did you know there is a tunnel under Ocean Blvd as the easiest album of his career, he guarantees the work is something unlike anything he’s ever done and is excited about this new phase.

“Whatever happens from here, I’ve already learned everything. I’ve learned everything I need to know, I don’t need to experience anything else. I’m really glad that I’ve overcome all these turbulent times, sometimes caused by myself, or imposed by other people. It shows that I’m lucky that my heart isn’t fragmented all over the world, in pieces with people it doesn’t belong to. My mind is sound and won’t let my stubbornness get the better of me.”
