Singer Ed Sheeran has released the music video for “Boat”, full of feelings and reflections. In the video he appears dressed in the sea to “beat” the waves. The idea would be a metaphor about depression.
Sheeran had already revealed in interviews that he “didn’t want to live” after episodes such as the discovery of cancer in his pregnant wife, as well as the sudden death of a friend.
Directed by Mia Barnes in her third collaboration with the singer, the video reflects apathy and the struggle against the cycle of sadness – “The more I love, the less I try… but the waves won’t break my boat,” says an excerpt from song.
“’Boat’ is the first song I wrote and finished for ‘Subtract’, it’s where it all started and it’s a good way to kick off the album,” Sheeran wrote on Instagram.
The track was released as the second clip/single from the album ‘-‘ (aka ‘Subtract’), due out May 5 – the first being ‘Eyes Closed’, also directed by Barnes. The name of the album refers to mathematical operations, as well as to the singer’s previous albums: “+” (2011), “X” (2014), “÷” (2017) and “=” (2021).
