The genre features on music charts in Brazil with names like Matuê, Veigh and Kayblack, but it started in the southern US and has infiltrated global pop
OR trapa variation of rap that originated in the southern United States, takes on a Brazilian face and is gaining more and more chart prominence here, even surpassing genres such as sertanejo and streaming pop.
The songs that deal with themes such as relationships, overcoming and showing off, are characterized by the use of synthesizers, AutoTune (vocal effect) and have low beats, drag and high cymbals accompanying the groove.
The beat has become so popular that even pop divas like Katy Perry and Anitta have incorporated it into their songs.
OR Stadium interviewed the specialists and main artists of the scene to understand the expansion of the genre in the country (here the complete story).
Below, we separate the songs for you to get acquainted with the trap.

The trap emerged in the southern United States, especially in Atlanta, in the 90s. It was ghetto music: the term refers to places where drugs are sold. The sound reproduced this dark atmosphere, with hedonistic lyrics, and began to become popular on albums such as Trap House, 2005, by rapper Gucci Mane.
A decade later, the beat was already the most featured in the US charts. The biggest commercial phenomenon was “Bad and Boujee” by the Migos trio.
Is it in Brazil?
In Brazil, the genre began to arrive at this time. They were still MCs emulating the mannerisms of the outsider. In 2015, Raffa Moreira and Klyn released the track FIAT 1995partnership between the two hunters and Dreyhan.
In 2016, rapper Baco Exu do Blues claimed a greater representation of the Northeast in the Brazilian rap scene and innovated by bringing trap beats to his track in collaboration with Diomedes Chinaski. The track was explosive.
It was in 2017, with the huge success of Matuê’s Anos Luz, that the genre gained more prominence in the music scene outside the style bubble. Currently the cerense remains one of the main names of the scene.
In 2019, Sidoka from Minas Gerais, with a unique and surprising style, stood out in the genre with his album Doka Language and his performance at the Cena Festival.
In 2021, twins Tasha and Tracie made room for trapped women with the release of the album Directoria. They are among the great promises of style, requested by the large market, as in partnership with Ludmilla.

2023 was also marked by the album Contradições, by Kayblack. Caveirinha’s brother also went viral with the song Melhor Só, his collaboration with Baco Exu do Blues. Passionate about pagodas, Kayblack is one of the artists who gives trap more of a Brazilian flavor.
Finally, Mc Luanna, who featured on Veigh’s album Dos Prédios, released her track Larga esse Vida last month, consolidating the women’s space in the genre.
