What made musicians leave Charlie Brown Jr in 2005, according to Champignon’s biographer

At the time, three of the four members of the band abandoned the project claiming “divergence of professional ideas”

In 2005, fans of Charlie Brown Jr were surprised by the news that three of the four members had left the band. the guitarist Marcão Brittothe bassist champignon and the drummer Renato Pelado communicated, together, their break with the vocalist crybaby.

Each instrumentalist continued his own projects, while the singer reformulated the Charlie Brownjr with other members — including guitarist’s return Thiago Castanho, who was part of the group in its early years. Although the subject has been widely discussed by musicians over the years — not least because of the fact that Mark and Champignon returned in 2011 — several topics regarding the split were not publicly addressed.

a biography about champignonentitled Champ: The Incredible Story of Charlie Brown Jr Bassist Champignonand written by Pedro de Lunaseeks to retell the entire trajectory of the bassist, who died in 2013, which includes this episode in which three-quarters of the Charlie Brown Jr dissolved. In an interview with the journalist Marcelo Vieira to the website IgorMiranda.com.brthe author presented some explanations for the dissolution, which occurred at the height of the group’s success.

Second from Lunathe problems especially between crybaby and colleagues started when the vocalist no longer allowed a collaborative environment within the CBJr. The biographer states that, at the same time, instrumentalists began to better understand the functioning of the music industry “as they circulated in the mainstream, meeting important people — producers, record company executives”.

“They began to understand how the issue of copyright works. [Começaram a] understanding that whoever wrote the lyrics earned an X value, and whoever wrote the composition, another X value. This started to generate disputes between them. Money is shit, because it corrupts, right?”

The singer’s difficult personality also contributed to the breakup, according to the author of the biography.

“When the original members left, the crybaby he was feeling like he owned the ball. ‘The band is mine, I created it, everything has to be my way’. So much so that the first article in national circulation that explained the reason for the fight, in the magazine Whimwas titled ‘Chorão Brown Jr’. I think it was part of his temperament to control, to want to be everything.”

Crying slave of creation itself?

Another point highlighted by Pedro de Luna is the excessive commitment of crybaby as Charlie Brown Jr. The vocalist demanded that all members dedicate themselves to the band in a way that only he could, since he was the only one to see the project as something that went beyond music.

“The guy couldn’t take a vacation. He was creating an empire that was no longer [só] the band. It was a band, a clothing brand, a skate park. He was creating so much that he became a slave to his own creation, which is very sad.”

O Charlie Brown Jr closed in 2013 shortly after the death of crybaby, on March 6 of that year, due to a cocaine overdose. Six months later, on September 9, Champignon took his own life.
