The headline, however, is still true, since Childish Gambino (stage name of Donald Glover) revealed in previous interviews that the single “This Is America” started as a joke and yeah diss track (offense track) directed at drake.

“Time is the oven that makes things special. I had the idea three years earlier. I told Hiro Murai [colaborador frequente de Glover e diretor do clipe da música] and he said, ‘I want to do this.’ I had the music, but the idea was a joke. The ‘this is America’ line was all we had,” he explained.

The song “began as a diss track pro drake” about the rapper’s Canadian origins. “It was a fun way. But I thought, ‘That sounds really good. I’m going to play a little.’ After a while, I told hirowho said, ‘Let’s go.'”
