Elis and the van: is this controversy justified?

Elis and the van: is this controversy justified?

Indeed, this propaganda should accelerate the discussion of AI legislation, and not just by Elis

As many ask me, here’s my two cents on the Elis Regina case in the Volkswagen 70th Anniversary commercial in Brazil, where she appears singing in a Kombi.

In the first place, because the legal angle is essential. According to current legislation, Elis’ children are heirs of her image, and from their statements it is clear that they were in agreement with the approach to the spot and its execution.

I’m as much a fan of Elis as anyone who loves music and I’m sure no one appreciates her legacy more than her children. If they thought that showing her younger than her would remind her country of her talent, that seems reasonable to me.

The main argument against is that Elis didn’t authorize the piece (obviously), and that maybe he didn’t want to advertise for VW for political reasons. I personally find it unreasonable to judge organizations or people for positions taken 50 years ago. My hair was awful at 15.

Does this mean that I am in favor of recreating images of people, whether they are great artists or not, and putting them to public use?

I’m not, but I think this announcement should speed up the discussion on AI legislation, and not just for Elis. We’re talking about a fascinating and scary set of possibilities, and I’ll give you a few more examples, all of which are technically possible today:

  • THE. Is it possible to digitally recreate someone’s great love, who died in a hypothetical accident, and bring him back to family life? Imagine the practical and emotional difficulties we would then have to ‘turn off’ this avatar.
  • B. And bring back mothers, fathers, grandparents… for counseling? We could also train them with letters, videos, texts from the original authors.
  • w. And since we are talking about art, can we feed hundreds of texts by a great author to the AI and ask for the creation of new works?
  • Q. Can I do the same with a painter? What value would a painting created by Picasso’s artificial intelligence have?
  • AND. And the concerts? Shall we recreate Elvis or Freddie Mercury and organize a new tour in 3D? Does anyone doubt that we will fill stadiums around the world?

Welcome to the new world, where the boundaries between real and imaginary are becoming more porous every day.
