The McFly song that was born after Iron Maiden imitation

British band known for mixing pop and rock explored heavier influences on their new album

Who would have thought that, almost two decades after its appearance, the McFly release an album with influences of 1980s hard rock and heavy metal? Power to Playseventh studio album by the British group, really shows such influences in some songs.

One of them is “Land of the Bees”, positioned as the second on the tracklist. The track has an introduction that refers to Rush, but soon acquires a touch that alludes to the hard rock/power pop of the 1970s. And there is yet another reference that many people will only discover because the members themselves revealed it.

In an interview with the website Igor Miranda, the vocalist and guitarist Danny Jones revealed to have created the vocal melody of “Land of the Bees” inspired by Bruce Dickinsonalso British singer Iron Maiden. He was satisfied with the result obtained.

“Tone [Fletcher, vocalista e guitarrista] and dougie [Poynter, vocalista e baixista] were playing upstairs and we were recording drums downstairs. Then I went upstairs, listened and soon started to imitate Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden. Dougie said it was really good. So we couldn’t get the expression ‘land of the bees’ out of our minds. And have the space for us [em um estúdio próprio] made the difference, because we developed everything with instruments.”

Drummer also pleased

Also present at the interview, drummer harry judd reinforced the satisfaction of Danny Jones not just with the song, but with the whole album. He admitted that he had wanted to explore this type of sound for a long time, which included even bolder tempo metrics.

“The highest melody came up with us saying: ‘higher, higher’ [‘mais alto, mais alto’]. Then there was a riff that we thought was cool and things came together. That middle part, in 7/8 time, the guys were there playing the riff in half time, so I said: ‘what if we played it in 7/8?’. They thought it was cool. I couldn’t even believe we were doing this because I’ve wanted to do this and explore things like this for so long as a band, but we never had the opening.”

Respondents’ favorite

Even during the chat, both Danny Jones how much harry judd quoted “Land of the Bees” as one of the best songs, if not the best, of Power to Play. juddinitially stated:

“I love all of them on the album, but I think my favorite is also ‘Land of the Bees.’ I would also say that ‘Honey I’m Home’ is special. I also love ‘Forever is Not Enough’. I really love them all, but these three stand out. We did a press show the other night and picked five to play: ‘Land of the Bees’, ‘Forever is Not Enough’, ‘Honey I’m Home’, ‘Taking Back Tonight’ and ‘Route 55’.”

Jones, in turn declared:

“’Land of the Bees’ is the most fun to play. I’m also looking forward to playing ‘Shine On’ live. I think it’s also a good one.”
