Whoa, Lilo & Stitch wasn’t originally set in Hawaii or an alien

Over the past two decades, lillo and point became a particularly popular film from Disney’s huge collection of iconic cartoon favorites. With him film that is about to turn 20 , it’s time to review its beginnings. According to lillo and point co-writer / director Dean DeBlois, much of the film’s core changed during its development at Walt Disney Animation.

When Gossipify talked about it with Dean DeBlois lillo and point, we asked about the evolution of the modern animated classic. The director, also known for just do it How to train your dragon trilogy , recalled how the idea was originally brought to Disney. In his words:

[Chris Sanders] had this idea on his mind, a children’s book he would write and illustrate that had accumulated dust on his shelf that he thought might be a bizarre, smaller, almost B-type budget, but with some kind of risk and a sort of adventurous departure from the Disney norm. And I thought it was great. She introduced him to the co-president of Disney productions of the time, a boy named Tom Schumacher. And Chris’s original story was about a creature of unknown origin found in a large forest species in the Pacific Northwest. He didn’t know where he came from, didn’t speak an animal language, and then found himself ostracized by the rest of the forest community.

Chris Sanders, who He co-wrote and directed the film Together with Dean DeBlois, he originally came up with the idea for a children’s book about a woodland creature who was an outcast in his society. The couple met while filming in 1998. mulan, which was DeBlois’ first feature film with Disney. DeBlois continued:

It was the story of this lonely creature looking for a sense of belonging and imitating the sounds of gurgling streams and the rustle of the wind in the trees and that was his means of communication, and it was this really sweet story. But when she told Tom Schumacher, Tom said, well, the animals of the forest are already a little alien to us. Wouldn’t it be the biggest contrast if this character ended up in a human child’s backyard and let that relationship grow? So he went from Stitch in the woods with other forest animals to Stitch and a guy in the Kansas countryside. And then he quickly evolved into Stitch with a Hawaiian girl.

lillo and point It sure wouldn’t be the same if it happened in Kansas and Stitch landed in a kid’s backyard. Here’s how it ended up being the movie we know and love:

[Sanders] He had just returned from his trip to Hawaii and thought, well, okay, it’s a pretty finished place. You know, it’s local enough not to attract national attention and military action, and it has some history in it, but it has a very specific culture. So that was evolution. But I was there from the beginning, when he first told Tom Schumacher, this idea that he had for a children’s book through the development of the story and a small step made with watercolor illustrations. And yes, we spend weekends and lunch breaks talking about it and developing what that story could be.

We’ve seen many extraterrestrial stories over the years, but it’s true: an element of lillo and point What really sets it apart from the rest is its location. Because it’s in Hawaii, it’s a smaller scale that doesn’t go like Eastern time path, which one later inspired DeBlois a How to train your dragon , with the government and other experiences. In addition to Hawaii being a good setting for making the story unique, the filmmakers also sought to capture the culture in an authentic way.

Much of this was the casting of Hawaiian actors Tia Carrere and Jason Scott Lee as Nani and David respectively. Carrere also spoke to Gossipify about how the directors of lillo and point it has brought “true inclusion” into cinema inviting Hawaiians like her to contribute to the film beyond the script they had written.

lillo and point is currently available for review with a Disney + subscription . Happy 20th anniversary of the Disney classic!
