The group’s second studio album, Shades of Sorrow, landed on two different Billboard charts.
It is not new that Crypta has stood out as one of the great references of Brazilian heavy music. Comprised of two former members of nervous, another successful group from the segment born in the country, the death metal band has conquered audiences from all over the world.
A reflection of this occurred in recent days, when his second studio album, Shades of Sorrow,entered the US charts for the first time. The local rankings are an initiative of billboard, magazine in circulation since 1894 and responsible for publishing the lists since 1913.
The band formed by Fernanda Lira (voice and bass), Luana Dametto (battery), Taina Bergamaschi (guitar) and Jessica di Falchi (guitar) – the first two ex-members of the aforementioned nervous -, debuted on the following targeted charts:
– Top Current Album Sales,with the most sold new albums in the United States in the so-called “pure sales” format (physical media, such as CD or LP, and digital download, not counting streaming) that week. In this list, the crypt reached the 71st position for having sold 1,000 units of Shades of Sorrowin the US during the first week of release (August 4-10, 2023);
– Emerging Artists, with the “emerging” artists who achieved more expressive numbers that week. In this ranking, the crypt peaked at #41 by unspecified numbers of Shades of Sorrowin “pure sales” + streaming during the first week of release (August 4-10, 2023).
The online version of billboard(via website Igor Miranda) even published an article with the debutants of its parade in the last week. A crypt was over there. The text signed by Xander Zellner it says:
“The Brazilian death metal band, from São Paulo, achieved its first appearance in the charts, thanks to its second studio album, ‘Shades of Sorrow’. Released on August 4th by the Austrian label Napalm Records, the group debuts in the 71st position of the Top Current Album Sales chart, with a thousand units of work sold. The band released their debut album, ‘Echoes of the Soul’, in 2021. The group also enters the 41st position of the Emerging Artists chart. Crypta is composed by Tainá Bergamaschi (guitar), Luana Dametto (drums), Jéssica di Falchi (guitar) and Fernanda Lira (bass/vocals).”
Crypta, Brazil and Sepultura
There are few artists and bands from Brazil that managed to enter the charts of billboard, regardless of list or position. One of the rare names to achieve this type of feat also comes from extreme metal: the Grave, thrash metal giant who has flirted with death, groove and black metal throughout his career.
The prominent insertions of the group at the time formed by Max Cavalera (voice and guitar) Andreas Kisser (guitar), Paulo Jr. (down) and Igor Cavalera (battery) occurred in the Billboard 200, the overall US album chart. The achievements came with the following discs:
– Arise (1991) – 119th position;
– Chaos AD (1993) – 32nd position;
– Roots (1996) – 27th position;
– Against (1998) – 82nd position;
– Nation (2001) – 134th position.
It is worth noting that the Grave also accumulates certifications for expressive sales in the country. Both Chaos AD and Roots were certified gold for having sold over 500,000 copies each.
In the overall ranking of singles, Billboard Hot 100, entered Astrud Gilberto (with Stan Getz),Sérgio Mendes, Eumir Deodato, Morris Albert, Cansei de Ser Sexy, Michel Teló, Claudia Leitte (with Pitbull and Jennifer Lopez), Nego do Borel (with Maluma) and Anitta. mendes, in fact, he is the Brazilian who most appeared in the ranking, with 14 insertions. The best position of a national artist in the American list of singles was conquered by Deodato, with his version for the symphonic poem “Also sprach Zarathustra”, in Richard Strauss.
