Argentina’s vice-presidential candidate on Javier Milei’s list, Victoria Villarruel, faces a wave of criticism after the reappearance of old posts on X, the former Twitter. Villarruel expressed disdain for K-pop and especially the group BTS, which sparked a fervent reaction from Argentine fans of the musical style.
In posts dated 2020, Villarruel expressed, “No adult can listen to K-pop.” In another, she said that “BTS sounds like the name of a sexually transmitted disease.”
Reaction from the K-Pop community
The discovery of the posts mobilized the K-Pop community in Argentina, which classified the comments as “hate speech” and xenophobia. A BTS fan page in Argentina released a statement repudiating the speeches and asking fans to report offensive messages.
The call not only resonated with Argentine fans, but also received support from followers in Mexico, widening the reach of the reaction. Furthermore, political figures such as Juan Grabois, who participated in the presidential primaries, expressed solidarity with the K-Pop community.
Villarruel’s reaction
Despite the reaction, Victoria Villarruel maintained a defensive attitude, limiting herself to apologizing for a specific reporting incident, without retracting the opinions expressed.
Both Milei and Villarruel are known for their extremist speech, which borders on the caricatured, and which is now under the microscope of an internationally connected fan base.
