Lizzo alters capacitist verse in lyrics of GRRRLS, single from the new album

“I never meant to promote derogatory language,” lamented Lizzo in a statement after criticism from the able-minded community.

Lizzo announced a change in the lyrics of ‘GRRRLS’days after the debut of the single, which is part of the singer’s fourth studio album, special. The re-release came after it was learned that one of the letters included “sp-z”, a word that is considered an ableist slur.

The word usually appears when one wants to attribute to someone the state of “outbreak”, but it is also present in the medical dictionary to describe spasms in people with cerebral palsy. Criticism was immediate.

In a statement, Lizzo stated that he never wanted to promote a kind of derogatory language in his songs and that he immediately requested a change in the lyrics.

As a fat, black American woman, I’ve had a lot of hurtful words being directed at me. So I understand the power that words can have (regardless of whether it was done intentionally. In my case, it was the opposite.
