Bono’s best Oasis song

Bono’s best Oasis song

The U2 singer has already revealed that he is a big fan of the Gallagher brothers — and even took one of them to open his band’s shows

Several artists from the 1960s and 1970s influenced U2. The vocalist Bono already mentioned names like Bob Dylan and Beatleswhile instrumentalists highlight punk bands such as The Clash and Sex Pistols. However, there is a group from the 1990s that the singer really admires: Oasis.

On more than one occasion, Bono He cited a song by the English band as his favorite of all time. Its about “Live Forever”third single from the guys’ debut album, Definitely Maybe (1994), and one of his first hits.

In 2006, the Irish singer was invited by Q magazine (via Igor Miranda website) to reveal the six songs he would like to have composed. He cited “Brownsville Girl” (Bob Dylan & Sam Shepherd), “Unfinished Sympathy” (Massive Attack), “The Last Song I’ll Ever Sing” (Gavin Friday), “Lucky Man” (The Verve) “Almighty Love” (Emm Gryner) and “Live Forever” (Oasis).

Regarding the last mentioned, he declared:

“’Live Forever‘ talks about being in a band. It’s us against the world, not me alone. I love the way it’s sung, the lyrics, the melody… Anyway, it as a whole. Today I feel like I no longer need to ‘live forever’.”

Open letter to Oasis

In 2020, Bono even published an open letter to members of the Oasis (via Far Out). The vocalist of U2 exalted again “Live Forever”.

“I don’t know what this song is about… I don’t want to know. I know you created this song, but it belongs to me. Well, actually it doesn’t, it belongs to us… or to anyone who’s ever been in a band. Because no matter what you say, this song is about being in a band. And it’s us against the world… a very different feeling from mine against the world. The last gang in town against the lone man.”

The Gallagher brothers’ opinion on U2

The brothers and leaders of the already closed Oasis, Liam (voice) and Noel Gallagher (guitar), they are notorious for practically not agreeing on anything. Not surprisingly, they ended the band on a war footing.

As expected, they have different opinions about the U2. Santa, for example, is a big fan and even toured with the group as an opening act, already in his solo career. In 2017, at Radio X, he stated:

“A lot of people trash them. In the United States, they are one of the greatest bands of all time. But in England, they get a lot of criticism, which is ridiculous when you think about how many records they sell. […] I’ve given up trying to defend U2 now. I’m like: if you understand them, great; if not, you will simply be a little more foolish.”

In turn, Liam Gallagher stated to Loudwirein 2022 that doesn’t even consider the U2 a rock band. For him, in fact, the musical style is “an endangered art form”.

“They pretend to be a rock ‘n’ roll band, what the f##k? Come on, man… I’ve never seen Bono or any of them do anything remotely rock ‘n’ roll.”
