The 75-year-old vocalist still manages to maintain a high level of energy and delivery in his live performances
Few rock stars have reached old age as well as Alice Cooper. The star born in 1948 remains so healthy at age 75 that many fans even wonder: how did he do it?
In an interview with the journalist Eddie Trunk (via Blabbermouth), the king of shock rock shared some reflections on the time he has left on the road. He confirmed what many already imagined: there is no plan to retire. Furthermore, he established the only condition for withdrawing from the stage:
“You need to be physically and mentally well. I would not like to present myself as Alice Cooper if I didn’t look like me anymore Alicethe same way I looked like Alice in the 70s. I still look like that Alice. [Eu pararia] If I couldn’t sing like Alice anymore, if I lost my interest in it, if I didn’t really enjoy doing it… and most importantly: if no one showed up to see me. You can go on tour and if no one buys tickets, it’s over.”
Even at this point in the championship, Cooper guarantees that demand for tickets to his shows has “doubled” compared to when he was younger.
“I think people come to see Alice and expect to see this ‘relic’, then they watch the most energetic show they have witnessed all year. I’ve never been in better shape.”
Not even Alice Cooper knows why he’s doing so well
Still during the interview, Alice Cooper admitted that not even he himself can say precisely why he can still deliver such an impactful show, as many of his contemporary colleagues have not maintained the same level. However, he tried to find some explanations for this.
“Physically, I can explain. I never smoked cigarettes. And that’s a big thing – that’s one of the big things that breaks up bands. Also, I stopped drinking 40 years ago. I managed to marry the right woman. Everything in my life is organized. I think stress kills more people than anything else. I don’t worry about anything. With my manager Shep [Gordon] and my producer Bob [Ezrin], I don’t need to worry about anything. So I’m just having fun out there.”
Finally, the shock rock giant — who released a new album, roadlast August —, stated:
“I could have retired 30 years ago, but man, that’s no fun. I want to be there on stage playing Alice.”
