A week before the shows in Interlagos, find out what the Cure’s big show is like, as well as the hits of Carly Rae Jepsen, black midi and DOMi & JD Beck. But Pet Shop Boys frustrates expectations… Read the analysis and watch the videos
Following the tradition started last year, in 2023 the Sound of Spring took place in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires a week before the Sao Paulo festival.
The Catalan festival, which will reach its twenty-second edition in Barcelona next year, it made its debut in Latin America in 2022 (it also takes place in Bogotá, Colombia) and this year has undergone significant changes: despite a notable reduction in the billboard, which has lost about half of its attractions , the festival expects a wave of public housing and move-ins in both cities.
In Sao Paulo he left the Anhembi sambadrome to go to the Interlagos racetrackhome to other megafestivals such as Lollapalooza Brazil and the The city. In Buenos Aires the event moved to Parque Sarmiento, where around 55 thousand people passed through every day this Saturday (25th) and Sunday (26th).
The Brazilian and Argentine versions have some differences in the lineup, the biggest of which is the absence of the English Blur in Sao Paulo. But most of the other shows will also take place at the Autódromo next weekend, then Estadao you’ve chosen four must-see shows – and one you can skip to – to help you put together your schedule in preparation for Primavera Sound.
Four unmissable shows
The cure
The two and a half hour opera The curewhich the English performed in Brazil ten years ago, continues to sound as beautiful as the last time.
The group hasn’t released a new album since 2008, when they released their thirteenth album, 4:13 Dream. But this hasn’t stopped the sextet, who have already surpassed forty years of band activity, from bringing some innovations to the table. Tracks like Alone AND And nothing is foreverwhich will be part of the group’s new album due out in 2024, appeared in the setlist of almost thirty songs.
But the most exciting moments, both for the band’s performance and for the audience’s reaction, continue to be those of great hits like Picture of you AND Close to me. The voice of Roberto Smith who, at 64, still looks like he is 20, seemed to be accompanied by everyone in the audience of 55 thousand people who attended the first day of Primavera Sound in Buenos Aires.
The show also makes clear the Cure’s greatest asset: writing love songs as few have done since: highlighting Love song and, of course, the classic Friday I am in love.
Carly Rae Jepsen
The blonde – not the one you’re thinking of – enchanted the audience on the Primavera stage with her sugary pop.
With a show that accompanied the sunset, Carly Rae presented a setlist mainly inspired by the pair of albums she released in 2022 and 2023 respectively – The loneliest moment AND The most beautiful moment.
Next Sunday it will be our turn! ?
Carly Rae Jepsen sings “Call Me Maybe” today at Primavera Sound Argentina.
— Listen (@escutai) November 27, 2023
The lack of hits during much of the pop show was a little disconcerting, but the singer managed to turn things around with Call me Maybe, released in 2012 and, to date, his biggest mainstream appearance. The audience attentively followed the lively performance of the Canadian, who with his song won over one of the biggest choirs of the festival.
The band, consisting of guitar, bass, drums and backing vocals, also showed harmony and formed good arrangements for Carly Rae’s 1980s songs. A show that – like Carly Rae’s sound – is simple and without great formulas, conquers with charisma and sweetness.
medium black
With the cover of his latest album Hell fire In the background, lined up on the stage, the black midi quartet puts on a dynamic and virtuoso rock show.
The band was born in 2017 in London and is part of a new movement in English rock which, alongside bands like Squid and Black Country New Road, has revived more abstract and experimental movements such as post-punk and krautrock.
On the first day of spring, under a still heavy five o’clock sun, the band performed its long songs to an audience that was already crowded in front of the main stages to watch the Cure that evening. Guitarists Geordie Greep and Cameron Picton, who take turns on vocals, use the variety of the band’s songs – sometimes slower, sometimes faster, sometimes quiet and sometimes loud – to cheer the audience on.
The quartet’s broken riffs may seem strange to those accustomed to the excesses of arena rock, but it’s worth opening your mind to the complex sound of black midi.
DOMi and JD Beck
Speaking of strange music, the duo formed by French pianist Domi Louna and American drummer JD Beck seems strange at first sight. The two play opposite each other – she sitting on a spectacular toilet – on a stage decorated with Japanese plastic flowers. But don’t let the duo’s youthful look fool you: the Jazz What they play is very adult.
With a little embarrassment and embarrassment towards the public, but not without a little tenderness, the two captured the attention of the still small public early on Sunday, who sat on the grass of Parque Sarmiento for attend the show.
Appointed to Grandmother of New Artist in 2022, Domi and JD have worked with a number of artists ranging from Ariana Grande to Herbie Hancock. On the Heineken stage at Primavera Sound Buenos Aires they demonstrated that, despite their young age, they already possess the dedication and mastery typical of jazz aces.
A disappointing show
Pet shop guys
Penultimate performance of the main stages on Sunday at Primavera Sound Buenos Aires, the performance of Pet shop guys It partly reminded me of Underworld’s show at the C6 Festival in Sao Paulo, in May 2023. Both are, after all, British duos who have made their careers in electronic pop and rely only on a synthesizer and a voice for their live performances.
The difference, however, to Underworld’s compelling presentation was the duo’s excitement and the sound quality. The second is perhaps the fault of the organization of Primavera Sound, and not of the artists, but in any case the lack of volume and strength in the bass and beats was harmful for the English.
The number of successes of the Eighties was not enough to support the duo’s performance, which found a lukewarm audience and without the strength to dance the most famous songs, such as West End Girls AND Always on my mind. The show seemed well rehearsed, with lighting effects and sets, but the Pet Shop Boys failed to translate their antics into a performance that communicated with the audience.
