“Mean Girls” dances in the remake trailer

Paramount released this Wednesday (3/1) the second trailer for the remake of “Mean Girls”, which as everyone knows is dressed in pink. The preview shows that the basic premise of the 2004 comedy remains the same, but it was accompanied by danceable musical numbers, downplayed as much as possible in the trailer.

As many still remember, “Mean Girls” was one of the most successful teen comedies of the 2000s. The plot featured Lindsay Lohan as a new student trying to fit in with the popular girl gang led by Rachel McAdams’ character. Actresses Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfried rounded out the villain team, while Lizzy Caplan represented the outcasts.

Same story, new cast

The new version follows Angourie Rice (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”) as Cady, a young girl new to a new high school, where she encounters a multitude of different groups and the dominance of Plastics, the girls the most envied, led by the cruel Regina George, now played by Reneé Rapp (“The Sex Lives of College Girls”). The leader of the popular kids at school continues to be pampered by her friends Gretchen (Bebe Wood, from “Love, Victor”) and Karen (Avantika, from “Back to the Ball”), dominating everything and everyone.

Feeling isolated, the new girl is taken in by Janis (Auli’i Cravalho, of “Crush”), supposedly the alternative girl of the group, and gay Damian (singer Jaquel Spivey), who convince her to infiltrate the girl group. Plastics to reveal all the dirt they hide. But, in the midst of her transformation into a fake Plastic, Cady falls in love with the class cat, Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney, from “The Summer That Changed My Life”), and soon starts acting like a real Plastic. In other words, it’s the same story fans know, complete with memorized phrases, but with extra choreography and some new lines.

The remake is an adaptation of the Broadway musical inspired by the original film, and is produced by Lorne Michaels (creator of the comedy program “Saturday Night Live”) and Tina Fey (screenwriter of the 2002 film). Fey also wrote the film update and returns to the cast as one of the classroom teachers. In addition to her, actor Tim Meadows (“Hubie’s Halloween”) reprises his role as the school principal. In the “adult” cast, the new features are the appearance of Jon Hamm (“Mad Men”) in the role of physical education teacher and Busy Philipps (“The White Girls”) in the role of Regina George’s mother.

It is directed by Arturo Perez and Samantha Jayne (both from the “Quarter Life Poetry” series).

Originally developed for the streaming platform Paramount+, the film ended up changing its destiny and will be released in theaters on January 11 in Brazil, one day before its premiere in the United States.
