The curious 1990s metal record that Sammy Hagar loves

Album mentioned by the former Van Halen singer during an interview is described as “innovative, raw and dark”

Who knows the career of Sammy Hagar, knows that no matter how many experiments may have been carried out, the sound presented was always inclined towards hard rock. Since before his involvement with the Van Halen (between 1985 and 1996 and from 2003 to 2005), the singer has a connection with the origins of heavy music: the debut album by Montrosereleased in 1973, was promoted as “the first heavy metal album recorded in the United States.”

Therefore, it is not surprising that, when asked to share the 5 albums that he cannot live without, Hagar would select a work of this genre. Still, the choice made by the singer during an interview with Spin (via website Igor Miranda) is a bit curious: Ænima (1996), second album by Toolintricate alternative/progressive metal group.

When talking about the material, Sammy admitted that he could never create music like the ones presented here.

“This album is so musically great – and far from something I could do – that it motivates and inspires me. It’s innovative, raw and dark.”

In his view, the band’s greatest highlight is the vocalist. Maynard James Keenanalso known for his work with A Perfect Circle It is Puscifer.

“I became friends with Maynard and I think he is one of the great artists of our time. A genius, a complete renaissance man. We’re like an odd couple.”

Tool and Ænima

Released on September 17, 1996, Ænima was the first album by Tool with the bassist Justin Chancellor, who has continued with the band since then. In addition to him and Maynard James Keenanthe group has Adam Jones on guitar and Danny Carey on the battery.

Ænima was able to expand the success achieved by the debut album, Undertow(1993). It sold 3 million copies in the United States alone, 148 thousand of them in the first week alone, and reached 2nd place on the national chart. It obtained significant positions in other countries, such as New Zealand (1st), Canada (3rd) and France (6th). It ranked 16th on the list made byRolling Stone USA of best metal albums of all time.

The songs “Stinkfist”, “H.”, “Forty Six & 2” and “Ænema” were promoted as singles. The last mentioned was awarded a Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 1998.
