Box offices in the United States and Canada are literally frozen this winter weekend, faced with snow and sub-zero temperatures. Not only was the collection one of the lowest in recent memory, but the Top 5 featured the same films as last week.
The top 5
“Mean Girls” remained the most-watched film for the second consecutive weekend, grossing just $11.7 million from 3,826 locations, a 59% revenue drop from its opening last week. In 10 days in theaters, the film grossed $50 million in North America and $66 million worldwide.
“Beekeeper – Rede de Vingança” repeated itself in 2nd place with 8.5 million dollars from 3,330 theaters. The Jason Statham-starring thriller grossed $31.1 million in the U.S., but did well overseas, bringing its earnings to $75.3 million globally.
“Wonka” also held on to third place with $6.4 million from 3,316 locations. The first blockbuster of 2024, the Warner Bros. musical has already totaled $187.2 million in the domestic market and $531.8 million worldwide.
“Everybody But You” came in at #4 with $5.4 million and also reached a financial milestone, surpassing $100 million at the global box office. Thanks to this, the Sony production became the R-rated romantic comedy, reaching the highest global box office since “Bridget Jones’s Baby” in 2016.
Closing the Top 5, the animation “Ducks!” grossed another $5.3 million, bringing its total to $94.7 million domestically and $191.6 million globally.
Below are the top 5
“Aquaman 2: The Lost Kingdom” ranked sixth, with $3.6 million, but continues to show strength overseas, nearing the $400 million mark at the global box office. This performance helps Warner avoid a bigger loss. Nonetheless, the studio brought forward the film’s streaming release, putting it up for digital rental on VOD starting Tuesday (1/23), trying to raise more money to cover the hole left by the investment in the production.
The week’s lead debut, “ISS,” ranked only No. 7, with $3 million in 2,250 locations. The independent science fiction film, starring Ariana DeBose and Chris Messina, elicited a lukewarm reaction from critics, with 62% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, but its fate was sealed by the coldness of the public, which gave it a C- on CinemaScore, a survey conducted at theater exits in the United States. Its launch in Brazil is not planned.
